Having a family portrait done at a photographers' studio on Sat, have never done anything like this before and no idea what to wear. Do we go matching or does that just look naf? Don't want to clash though. Studio have told us not to wear all white as photo will be done against a white background, but apart from that have no clue! Help!

I would choose something plain, unfussy and clasic. That way it won't look so dated. Have fun!

Thanks, that's the look I want to achieve but not sure how, exactly! Any suggestions? (Sorry I realise that's an impossible question without listing out the whole contents of my, DH and DS's wardrobes, but any thoughts on the kind of thing that might work!! We are generally a jeans and jumper kinda family if that helps!)

no stripes, no checks, no clashing of patterns, or clashing colours, nothing too high fashion, simple simple simple

We had family photo done all had jeans on bottoms (well dd1 had denim skirt, funky tights and bright top and dd2 had bright top and tights and denim pinafore dress)

dh and i had dark denim jeans and I wore plain black top and DH had lilac colour polo shirt - but after all that we chose black and white pictures

We are also getting ours done this Sat. however we have been told that white on top is good even with a white background. It will be jeans/denim of sorts for our lot although we will probally go for b&w.

We wore jeans. Baby had a top and a little waistcoat, ds1 had a long sleeved top, dh had a dark top, I had a short sleeved chinesey thing. But TBH, they homed in so much on our faces, and we were quite close together on group shots, that you can hardly see what we're wearing!

SelfishMrsClaus · 05/12/2007 23:44

We had a family one done last week of all the grandchildren for my mam for Xmas.

There were 15 of them

All wearing white tops & blue jeans with lovely bare feet.. it was so relaxed! All the kids had fun. We took pics of them giving each other piggy backs, or ds looking through dds legs upside down.. we even had one of ds with my sister's wee dog!!

I don't think it matters what you wear as long as you have nothing that the eye will be drawn automatically to!

As I say, we all had white tops & jeans on the kids.. except my brother who went against the grain & put his dd in a red dress Not sure how that's going to turn out, but hey ho

lenaschildminding · 05/12/2007 23:50

We recently had ours done, me, DH, DSD and DS wore dark blue jeans and white long sleeved tops with bare feet and DS (14 months) wore a pink dress! That was on a white background and it looked great.

Jacksmybaby · 06/12/2007 11:20

Liking the jeans with white tops idea - and have looked on the photographer's website and there are some good shots of families wearing that... now just have to find a plain white t-shirt for DS (all his tops are bright colours/patterned/stripey!) and no idea where is going to sell them!

We had ours done recently and all wore dark jeans and blue tops - I had a plain navy top, DH a plain mid-blue top and DS a stripy blue top. They came out really well in the photos, which were all done on a white background (so I wouldn't suggest a white top otherwise you'll look as though your heads are floating). We were all barefoot too.

Jacksmybaby · 06/12/2007 18:52

Bought white fitted v neck top for me and white t shirt for DS today in M&S (DH already has white polo shirt I think) - but now not sure about the whole white thing - something like what CurrantBun said would be the other option (i.e. same colour tops but different shades of it so not obviously "matching"). Well the studio has suggested taking a couple of different outfits to wear so might take along some blue tops too. Love the barefoot idea - now just have to worry about the state of my toenails (and don't get me started on DH's)...

Jacksmybaby, don't worry about the toenails - our feet only featured in one or two of the shots and then not in much detail. I'm a distance runner and believe me, my feet are not pretty , but they looked fine in the pictures.

Cool, thanks CB!
