Desoerately seeking dashing funeral outfit!

Help. I sadly have a funeral to go to, and need to be quite formally dressed. You'd think black would be easy but I can't find anything I like :( and that fits the bill. I don't know if I'm being too fussy! I am over thinking, this is long, so bear with...

• I would love a dress (midi rather than maxi as I'd like to wear heels and would trip over a long hem 🤣)
• Could do skirt or trews but I'm am an apple (well, actually a sausage) and so skirts/tops make me either look like a tightly bound mattress or very matronly as I have biggish boobs.

The lovely lady who died always looked absolutely stunning and it would be a terrible dishonour to her if I turn up looking like I havent put any effort in.

Plus lots of my ex husbands friends and family are going that I havent seen in ages and whilst he, his new partner and I genuinely get on great, I have put on so much weight since we split that I need to pull something half decent out of the bag or risk hiding in the corner during the wake and getting lots of sympathetic looks at my life having taken such a drastic nosedive since they last saw me. (It hasn't!)

I'm a size 18-20, 5ft7, it has to be black and I am shitting myself at not being able to find anything and her family thinking I just haven't bothered.

Budget up to £150. Has anyone seen anything ANYWHERE? Or tell me whether I should just wear a black sack and scuttle off before the wake? (Not actually an option, she was my ex mil and very much loved)

Would this Boden dress be any good, with fabulous heels?

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 10/09/2021 17:56

Grr. It didn't post all the links. This is the 2nd image I think

And this is the third (hopefully)

They should all work with an apple figure, but I do like the jolie moi twist waist. It partly depends how busty you are though as the v neck might look better if you're generous of bosom

This, I think it's nicer than plain black www.marksandspencer.com/polka-dot-round-neck-midaxi-tea-dress/p/clp60532300?color=BLACKMIX

TaraR2020 · 11/09/2021 02:34

Have you looked at Coast, Closet London and Pretty Dress Company?

TaraR2020 · 11/09/2021 02:35

This!

peachycream31 · 11/09/2021 06:36

Sorry am a bit rubbish putting it all in one message. I think the second dress I sent is really nice.

With a thin black cashmere cardigan.

BombshellHQ! Stunning dresses, although may be around the £200 mark. You could try Vinted or eBay for cheaper

RobertClementHughes · 12/09/2021 09:32

Thanks all, have ordered the boden and hot squash wrap dresses plus a couple of others. Have got some lovely shoes just waiting to be worn so that bit is sorted.

Thank you @TaraR2020 for the flowers x

I'm in the same position, only difference is I'm 5' 8"

I've ordered three dresses from John Lewis which I can collect today, I just searched for size 18, black dresses and sorted by price... if any of them look nice I'll come back and let you know!

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 14/09/2021 08:14

Do post a photo of the winner. I'm bizarrely over invested!

mdh2020 · 14/09/2021 08:39

Do people really worry what they will look like at a funeral? I find this thread rather bizarre.

Sooverthemill · 14/09/2021 10:53

Sézane have some lovely black dresses.

Yes of course they do. OP has said she has put on weight and is seeing people she hasn't seen for a while, including her ex. I'd say it's very important that she finds something comfortable and flattering.
dudsville · 14/09/2021 12:25

I love this. My grandmother was a stunner and in tribute I wore lipstick to her funeral whereas I'm normally very understated.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 14/09/2021 20:18

Just as a further comment I adore my MIL but am getting divorced. If I had to attend her funeral one day in the future I would want to look my best, both out of respect to her and for my own confidence seeing all my ex in laws again - what an upsetting and stressful situation. Hope you get a dress that makes you feel your best and you can pay fitting tribute to her x

twinklestar2 · 14/09/2021 20:23

You could wear one of those fabulous small hats with a veil that comes over your eyes like the duchess of Cambridge at Prince Philips funeral.
