You lot are the authority on where to dress shop…please help me out?

Mumsnet are solid when it comes to clothes shopping. Someone always knows where to look.
I want to buy a dress. What I want is quite specific and I am running out of places to try. If I list a few of the brands I like and have looked at, some of you might know of others I haven’t come across before.

I like Anthropologie, Sezane, East, Monsoon, Nomads, Seasalt, Boden…you get the schizzle.
I want a dressy but casual dress. Something boho I guess…but elegant for a party. Something knee length or just above. No midi, no maxi, no mini please. Something I can lounge and dance in and be comfortable. I can’t deal with fussy clothes you have to stand up straight in.

I want a party dress I can roll out when the rare need arises. I have a couple of bashes coming up and a big Christmas do to attend. I want a dress to suit all.
Moon on a stick? Seems like it.

If anyone can link to websites they know of, please do.
Thank you.

Rotate Birger Christensen do amazing party dresses. I think they’re stocked in Selfridges. Maje might be worth a look too.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 02/09/2021 19:53

Sleeves? Neckline?

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 02/09/2021 19:53

Pattern / print / sequins / etc ? Further guidance needed. Also any pics of the kind of thing you’re looking for, from magazines etc?

Miseryisabutterfly · 02/09/2021 19:55

This is quite sedate by their standards but it looks very comfy (not frumpy) and the length looks right? www.theoutnet.com/en-ie/shop/product/rotate-birger-christensen/dresses/knee-length-dress/ruched-velvet-dress/13452677151933229

This is a bit flashier

How about this from BA&SH
Knee length and fabric looks comfy - not sure if fancy enough for your dos though?

Ok sleeves…I prefer to have them as although slim and a size 8 I have flappy bingo wings. I will brave sleeveless if the dress is worth it.
No to sequins, studs, diamanté et al…yes to beads, embroidery, metallic thread, metallic detailing if subtle. I like a bit of twinkle…I’m not looking to dazzle. I like flouncy sleeves but not frills.
I never wear white, red or beige. I tend towards blues, greens, purples, black. I like baked earth colours, jewel colours, bold colours…don’t do pastels, floral or frilly.

Does that help? Thanks again.

I tried this dress on in Monsoon a couple of years ago. It’s spot on. I really regret not buying it.

magenta velvet

emerald and lace

trendily victorian

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 02/09/2021 20:36

That Joe Browns stuff looks so cheap and synthetic. Try Ebay for the one who got away? You never know.

merryhouse · 02/09/2021 20:38

oooh, that's a step up from frumpy. I love this place

pictish · 02/09/2021 20:39

I have tried eBay…I have searched for the dress but alas, it’s not to be had.
Joe Browns quality is so poor…fabrics are very cheap, finish is terrible. Sorry to be a negative Nellie but I’ve been stung by them before.

Gosh that is a lovely dress OP. I’m sorry I don’t have any immediate ideas about where to find something similar but I will have a look around.

pictish · 02/09/2021 20:53

It is. sob

I’ve had some lovely pieces from Sessun in previous years (great prices in the Liberty sale) they have a grown up boho vibe and the quality is lovely.

pictish · 02/09/2021 21:04

Grown up boho…that’s a good description.

Wolf and badger can be good.

I have three favourites that have lasted years from coast, Tesco and Wallis. All random buys but perfect to fling on when I don’t know what to wear. Ones with metallic thread tend to come in around October.

PegasusReturns · 02/09/2021 21:08

Usually I’d say The Kooples but this season is generally a bit flat. How about one of these:

This one is midi but similar length to the one you loved from monsoon

Or this suncoo dress

Really like the dress on the second link Pegasus - it’s too short though, I’d be tugging at it all night long. I actually like the dress in the first link too but it’s too long…couldn’t dance in it without looking like I was at a Halloween party. Some would consider that a bonus, which is sound enough…but I couldn’t pogo to The Ramones in it, even theoretically.

All good suggestions Pegasus. I like your eye.

@pictish how tall are you - remember The Koople models have giraffe like legs Grin I often find their short dresses just above knee on my 5’ 4” self
