'Smart dress' - I've never done smart and I don't like shopping. Advice please!

I'm soon going to be a 51 year old postgrad and am getting emails about dinners in college and 'smart dress'. I am not a shopper, buy things from the reduced/sample rails in Toast outlet and a local clothes agency (both where if I like it and it fits means that I don't have to browse through racks and racks) and that is pretty much it. I tend to wear comfortable clothes - I'd like Margaret Howell if I could afford it - and nearly always wear boots (Blundstones not long ones) and Grenson shoes. I have never worn heels. I have longish curly hair which has always been my excuse for not looking smart/polished and am fairly flat-chested so don't wear dresses beyond tunic style. I am 5'6, size 12, sometimes a 10 (in Toast) and have size 8 feet.

Can anyone suggest any online shops which would clothe me?

Does it have to be online? Because I would 100% suggest getting a John Lewis personal shopper session. They'll find you something versatile and flattering.

Basically, though, I'd get a dark-coloured plain shift dress and wear it with flat sandals. You can jazz it up with jewellery, blazers, wraps etc as needed and desired.

Try something like stitchfix? It's basically an online personal shopper.
