How do I make my plain black dress a bit more exciting?

I t is DH's work do next week & I am planning to wear one of my favourite dresses. It is black with no sleeves, but thick straps instead, fitted bodice & full skirt that falls just below the knee. The only decoration is a satin ribon tie around the waist.I love it,but as all the girls dh works with will be wearing the latest stuff & glammed up to the nines,I think I might look just a bit dull in comparison.

Any advice on what to do to make it a bit more exciting?I'm quite handy with a needle, but don't have much spare cash-hence me wearing the same dress as last year.

Thanks.

i am recommending these on every party dress thread. they are SUPER.

Statement jewellery. Relatively cheap costume stuff. Try matalan.

IMO sometimes you just can't beat a lovely black dress that fits perfectly and makes wearer feel great - maybe you could buy some gorgeous shoes and jewellry (plus maybe have your hair proffessionally put up?)

Or, perhaps a new belt instead of the sash, perhaps sequinned (maybe you could make this yourself?)

dyzzidi · 02/12/2007 21:24

I was going to suggest some patterned/lacey tights with the high stilleto platformed heels.

Or the shoes in a daring Red or Silver then costume jewellry to match.

Could you chane the sash to match the shoes?

mummy2twoboys · 02/12/2007 21:25

A lovely brooch on it?

kittylouise · 02/12/2007 21:30

What about a sequinny/satiny bolero.

Or replace the ribbon round the waist with sme different coloured or sequinny ribbon (dp bought me a thin sequin scarf from Dorothy Perkins last week and it looks great loosely tied round the waist my new party dress)

Or some new shoes - bright jewel coloured ones are fashionable at the mo and are everywhere, Faith and New Look have loads of different colours and not too expensive.

Or a necklace with a large pendant.

purple or silver are the 'in' colours right now.

some fab shoes and matching bag/accessories and you'll be bang up to date.

MarsyChristmas · 05/12/2007 23:24

Bling! lol

Huge silver accessories unless you are a redhead, suit more muted tones... then go for gold! Or of course diamante!

moondog · 05/12/2007 23:26

Fishie,they are minging!!
I would go for loads of flashy jewellery 9cheap stuff ine) and seamed stockings.

Will knock 'em dead!

MuthaHoHoHubbard · 05/12/2007 23:30

am personally lovin these at the mo.

would go fab with seamed stockings as moondog suggested.

moondog · 05/12/2007 23:34

Hmm, a wee bit air hostessy I think Mutha....

MuthaHoHoHubbard · 05/12/2007 23:39

see what you mean moon, especially the red ones.

moondog · 05/12/2007 23:40

Mind you some people love that whole airhostess thang.

Doors to manual!

slim22 · 06/12/2007 01:35

big bold brooch (think 1950ies glamourous costume jewellery)

Fabulous sleek hairdo and ava gardner (or Gwen stefani) make up (eye liner, high cheeks, red lipstick)

trimmed polished red nails would be a plus.
