Irony of the mom jean

I've just bought my first pair of mom jeans. I feel that I was entitled to now I'm a mum and no longer a girlfriend (goodbye bf and goodbye gf jeans!). However, my new mum body doesn't appear to be the right type for my mom jeans. My bum is too saggy - the jeans try to sculpt my bottom to a height I don't think it has actually ever been. The seam in the back was more uncomfortable and felt more intimate than a g-string. The waist band gaped ridiculously at the back
particularly when considering there was no room for my stomach which protrudes more than I wish it would since housing a child. So I kind of feel the need to ask "who are mom jeans for...?" Because they certainly don't appear to be for actual mum's at all!

It's a no from me too. I resemble a weeble that has pro created with a hobbit in mom jeans

TowelStripes · 31/08/2021 21:33

Not all mom jeans are created equal. Some look awful on me, others look great. Topshop mom jeans suit me the most.

Lupinhere37 · 31/08/2021 21:36

I bought a really comfy and flattering pair from Gap. Needed to size down (very exciting!). They’re perfect but any other brands have looked hideous on me, so aside from my Gap pair, I’d agree!

LegendaryReady · 31/08/2021 21:40

My much more with it than me sister has started wearing them. They look comfortable so I applaud her but they are not at all flattering. And she's 5'8" and very slim. Everything looks good on her.

These do indeed make her look like a middle aged mum. She is a middle aged mum, but she doesn't usually look like one Grin

@Nobranothanks 😂

This was the very funny blog I first heard of the "Mom Jean" on, way before they became a fashion thing! I wonder if she ever managed to cash in on coining the phrase?

Cam2020 · 31/08/2021 22:20

Tbey look awful on me too. I'm an hourglass so my waist is a size smaller than the day of me. I also jace a non-existent arse so I look like I have a long butt, made worse by the jeans slipping down my waist Shock

makkapakka212 · 31/08/2021 22:29

Try a high waisted staight leg, i fond them more flattering

Alternista · 31/08/2021 22:30

I don’t think I’ve ever seen them look flattering tbh. I don’t think they’re meant to?!

Not according to the Oxford Dictionary definition…

mom jeans
noun INFORMAL
women's jeans of a style regarded as unfashionable or unflattering.

TuftyRusty · 01/09/2021 08:29

Sometimes I think the Mom jeans, and all the other various baggier jeans are a bit of a backlash to the skin tight Kardashian inspired look. A lot of young women I see around at the moment are wearing baggy jeans, chunky trainers, no make up, loose natural hair. They look great - I don’t think it’s about showing off your body/shape.

Divebar2021 · 01/09/2021 10:28

Why did you buy jeans that don’t fit you properly? Mums come in all shapes and sizes as do jeans. There are so many shapes around BF GF Mom Barrel Straight Flared, wide, High-waist, cropped… I’m sure there will be a pair out there for you somewhere.

WhoKnewYou · 01/09/2021 17:50

I bought them online to try at home. I just couldn't believe how uncomfortable they were. I thought they'd be really comfy. I got them the next size up too for extra slouch. My search continues.

Tried a pair last week, I did look like a mum - the mum of an elephant to be precise.

Accidentgirlfriend · 01/09/2021 18:01

They look hideous on me and make me feel 10 sizes bigger ! I’m a weird Apple shape all belly , no bum and slim legs so I need to go up a size coz they are tight on the belly then they make me feel enormous coz they are baggy on my bum and legs !

Not for me !

Guineapigbridge · 01/09/2021 18:04

The worst thing about mom jeans is that you have to have a very flat stomach or they accentuate the roundness.
I've gone off jeans tbh. There's so many other comfortable smart casual options around.

Snoken · 01/09/2021 18:21

I am yet to find a pair of mom jeans that look good on me. I think you need to have a super slim body with a pert little bum and definitely no belly. Basically, they don’t fit the classic mom body, but somewhere out there, there is a lucky mum who looks good in them.

bilbodog · 01/09/2021 18:38

M&S have some good jeans at the moment - lots of stretch which always helps and not expensive.

VaguelyInteresting · 01/09/2021 18:41

I’ve just got 2 pairs of high waist, straight leg jeans from M&S that I roll up to ankle length and are comfy and not hideous. I DO still have a slightly rounded tummy in them (am a size 14) but prefer loose longline tops anyway so that’s fine.

DoYouLikeOwls · 01/09/2021 19:42

I've just tried some Mum jeans on today that I ordered from Next. They look awful on me. I've kept the slimfit jeans.

Okaygreatthanks · 01/09/2021 20:20

Yes mine were definitely designed by young slips of things, they are baggy all over but the waistband is soooo tiny, I felt like emailing them to say ‘if this is what you think a mom bod is, good luck!’ However they kicked me up the (long saggy) arse to do the low carb boot camp and now they are less asphyxiating, so they’re sort of a win?

I suspect marks have the flattering ones. I’m a bit concerned that I have bought several nice things in marks in recent months including (hangs head)…

…

… per una.

There. I said it. (Sobs into rounded tum).

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/09/2021 20:21

They are not very flattering around the tum, which is annoying as I've a huge bum and they fit around the hips great.
