My lovely Clinique collection is running out and I can't afford to replace it. So, I'm looking for alternatives - I'm thinking Maybelline, Max Factor, Neutrogena, L'Oreal etc

I need to know about:

Foundation (something light, not greasy)
Powder
Concealer
Eyeshadow
Lipstick that stays on

I read the liquid eyeliner thread, so I know all about that

All help gratefully received!

TIA

bourjois do some nice light textured foundations.

ssd · 02/12/2007 09:38

boots foundation is good

fishie · 02/12/2007 09:46

this is fantastic, i never wore foundation before because it feels so heavy. i've been wearing sample pot every day for a month and is still half full.

RubySlippers · 02/12/2007 09:55

bourjois for eye shadows as well as their foundation - their "look like you have had 10 hours sleep foundation" is good IMO

Barry M glitter dust for evening wear - great shimmery colours

i have never found a good, cheap lipstick and tend to stick to glosses

No.7 concealer is good - not too gloopy and blends well

Furball · 02/12/2007 09:59

boots natural collecton eye pencils and mascara, ok so they are not on your list, but are really cheap and really good

RubySlippers · 02/12/2007 10:04

Furball - i use the natural collection mascara and it is the best i have ever used and less than a fiver

MuthaHoHoHubbard · 02/12/2007 14:36

For cheap maybelline/rimmel and other products - www.saveonmakeup.com seems quite good.

TellusMater · 02/12/2007 14:43

Another vote for bourjois.

OverRated · 02/12/2007 20:06

I hadn't thought of Bourjois - I'll have a look to see if I can get it over here. Thanks for all the recommendations

Maybelline mascara - pretty good imo (I stopped using my old Chanel favourite when I ran out, bought a Maybelline one out of desperation....and realised it was much, much better).

I also like Rimmel eyeliners and lip liners, and that good old fashioned Ultraglow bronzer - just as good as my Nars one for a quarter of the prize.

Roskva · 03/12/2007 16:58

bourjois is Chanel's cheap brand. But I like maybelline mascara too.

Barry M excellent for lipgloss

Collection 2000 for fashion make up, lip and cheek tint and their 3 in 1 foundation and their compact powder is amazing

rimmel mascara, the new one with a brush, it was on offer for £4.99 in boots last week

InTheseShoes · 03/12/2007 17:42

Maybelline 16 hour wear lipstick is fabulous! Loads of shades and you only have to apply once a day - £7 usually but often on offer for £5 - I actually buy mine on ebay for about £3, so you could find a shade you like and then search there - in fact that applies to lots of makeup types, cheap or expensive

Heathcliffscathy · 03/12/2007 17:43

rimmel lip gloss. barry m dazzle dust.

bodyshop vit e cream

JeremyMcVile · 03/12/2007 18:19

Cornsilk loose powder.

It's really fine and translucent, comes in two types - one more shimmery than the other, which is still subtle enough for daytime.

Superdrug and Boots stock it, usually hidden down some strange aisle or other as it's nt part of a wider range.

6 or 7 quid.

If you're used to Clinique, which is fairly hypoallergenic, be careful with some of the cheaper ranges. Bourjois and Maybelline eyestuff made my face explode, took months before I could wear eyemakeup again after the maybelline
Boots no. 7 is always good though. And some of the Tesco's stuff - Barbara Daly (?) and an indian name I've forgotten.

Tinker · 04/12/2007 19:22

I love Bourjois as well. (It isn't anyone's cheap brand/tester range though. I wrote to teh Indie on Sunday about that very issue and even had my letter printed in teh Dear Annie column )

Tamum · 04/12/2007 19:29

Really, Tinks? My SIL, who works for women's fashion mags, always told me it was Chanel in disguise. Is it just an urban myth then?

Tinker · 04/12/2007 19:30

Annie said it was an Urban Myth. She might be wrong, of course. I'm just the messenger.

ggirlsbells · 04/12/2007 19:32

no 7 intelligent foundation is fab

very light ,easy and quick to apply ,very natural looking

Tamum · 04/12/2007 19:42

Oh no, I trust Annie. Well well.

Vintagebeads · 01/10/2015 09:46

If you like almost lipstickby clinique the mua version in superdrug is good, and about a quid.
BarryM do great gel nail varnish
I have dry skin and am still on the hunt for a good foundation, just brought colour match by Revlon/max factor
