18 yo DS2 and his beautiful hair

DS2 has never liked having his haircut. When I was in charge, he had it cut about once or twice a year. He'd ,by choice, have it cut short then leave it until it was chin length.

He hasn't had it cut since he left school 2 years ago. It's "strawberry blonde", thick with a slight wave. When it's clean it is really very beautiful, but obviously it does need a little bit of attention/the occasional trim. I think it would benefit from a bit of shape too. It's basically a grown out short back and sides, currently and down to his shoulders.

He's a quiet, nervous thing, one of the reasons he avoids the hairdressers in the first place. How does a man with long hair go about getting a haircut. Presumably rocking up at a walk in barbers isn't it?

Ultimately it's down to him, but he could use a bit of help.

Mobile hairdresser, or haircut by his mum.

Theunamedcat · 15/08/2021 12:50

Of course you can go to a walk in barbers men have long hair too

Chickmad · 15/08/2021 12:51

My sons prefer to make an appointment at the salon I use. It is about the same price but you have a set time, no waiting in a line AND you get a lovely cup of coffee.
They haven't been to the barbers since.

Of course they do, but do they use walk in barbers? I don't think they do.

Barbers - usually walk-in,
Hairdressers - make an appointment
Mobile hairdresser - at home, may be good if he’s nervous at the thought of a barbers.

titchy · 15/08/2021 12:55

Why wouldn't they use a walk in barber? Barbers do scissor cuts you know. Confused

ExpressDelivery · 15/08/2021 12:57

Well, that was my question. Whenever DS has been to a barbers for a trim he's come back with short back and sides. Which may well be because that's what he's asked for, I don't know. He doesn't seem to have been able to get his long hair styled at the barbers only cut off.

Book a mobile hairdresser for both of you

Unfashionable · 15/08/2021 13:22

He should book an appointment at a salon. My DP has thick, long-ish wavy hair and he doesn’t use barbers because they are only really comfortable doing short back & sides clipper-cut styles. He uses salons, which is obviously more hassle in that you need to make appointments and more expensive but it’s how he gets his hair done the way he wants it.

NotMeNoNo · 15/08/2021 13:26

My 17yo DS has long hair too, after about 2 years I booked him in with a young stylist at the salon I use. A year later he’s just had another trim before college. She did a great surfer style shoulder length cut for him.

BiBabbles · 15/08/2021 13:32

There are walk-in barbers, though some specialize -- one near where I used to live only did really short cuts & didn't do "long" hair or scissor cuts. The advertising usually gives that away though.

A unisex hairdresser, maybe a training place if you have one near you, might be a better bet in my experience - the one near me was brilliant with my son.

morethanthisprovinciallife · 15/08/2021 13:36

My 16 year old ds has always had long hair he uses my regular salon a couple of times a year and has a trim and conditioning treatment.

Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx · 15/08/2021 13:38

A men’s hair salon would be fine, for example in Leeds there is somewhere called Boris and Co .. it’s a barbers and you pre book. No walkins.

Look near to you… it will be costly but have a search

Earlydancing · 15/08/2021 13:45

There are 2 walk in barbers near me that do long hair. I know because my sisters been to both! They'd rather do short back and sides because it's easier money but they do do longer hair - one was happier than the other! If I were you, I'd call in myself (not say its about my son) and make enquiries what they do. But does he want to keep his hair long? Or is it long because he doesn't like getting ir cut?

ElspethFlashman · 15/08/2021 13:50

Tbh I'd just do it myself in the kitchen, especially if he's got social anxiety.

All you have to do is watch a couple of YT videos so you know how to get both sides the same. It may not be professional standard obviously, but with long hair you can definitely get away with a non professional trim.

I used Brad Mondo's 'guide to cutting your own hair' on YT for my kids, I never get it as neatly as he did, but it works well for bringing up to shoulder or ear length - also his one on microbangs using clippers made one of my kids very happy.

My DBro has a retro haircut - bit like this and he goes to the same hairdresser as his girlfriend, they shape it and cut into it to create the shape, then style it for him. He's a real convert, he loves the hair washing and scalp massage - says he'll never go to a barber's again!

Barbering and hairdressing are different skills. He should book into a hair dressers

Woolver23 · 15/08/2021 17:10

My male hairdresser wears his hair something akin to Jon Bon Jovi c.1986 (well, not quite, but I think that must be the inspiration) so let's assume he knows a thing or two about styling men's long hair.

Mumsnut · 15/08/2021 19:57

Woolver - I beg to differ!

Trisolaris · 15/08/2021 20:00

I would go to a place that does men’s and women’s hair - much more likely to have greater skill with scissor cuts for men.
