What to use for curls?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/08/2021 09:55

After years of blow-drying I've decided to embrace my natural wave. Looks good when it's wet and as it dries but after a few hours looks a bit unkempt.

What can I use to make it look a bit more defined?

Thanks in advanceFlowers

I use Noughty Wave Hello range - shampoo, conditioner and creme. Love it. I think I’m probably a 2b/2c going by the pic a PP uploaded.

tabulahrasa · 04/08/2021 23:32

I use innersense - I create hold gel.

Cantu is horrible in my hair, I’ve fine 2b/2c waves and cantu is way too heavy for my hair. It just creates a horrible build up.

purplemunkey · 04/08/2021 23:38

Yes, I found a lot of products designed for curly hair are too heavy for my hair as I have a lighter wave. Curly girl method didn’t work for me. The Noughty range is working for me at the mo. As others have said, I only comb through the conditioner and creme - I don’t ever brush or comb my hair once it’s dry. Use cotton T-shirt or micro fibre towel after washing, then scrunch and air dry. It’s worked wonders for frizz control.

I’ve come on to recommend Sainsbury’s coconut conditioner, costs only 75p

Thanks @AllisoninWunderland I'm fairly sure they have Hask at our branch of Waitrose, so I'll have a look next time I'm in.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/08/2021 16:45

Cantu just arrived, HUGE bottle. Not sure I'll be able to tolerate the smell,it's very strong. I'll have a go with it tomorrow🤞

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor how exciting! A little goes a long way with Cantu so you won't have a strong scent

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/08/2021 17:05

Ah ok,great,it smells so strong in the bottle.

I find Cantu a bit heavy for my 2b/2c curly hair, mine behaves better with the Umberto Giannini gel (pink tube).

I apply it to soaking hair after washing with conditioner (I usually put a little conditioner as a leave in), then wrap in a t-shirt or microfibre towel. I tend to let it air dry then scrunch out the crunch. Some days it looks great, other days it's a bit rubbish!

I'm going to a curly hair specialist hairdresser soon, am very excited about seeing whether they way they cut it makes a difference.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/08/2021 10:19

Right, I have it on, really finding the smell hard to cope with but hoping I'll get used to it or it'll fade. It's so thick, I had to wipe some off on a towelGrin

Oh and initial thoughts are-curls are FABULOUS!!!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/08/2021 13:17

How are you getting on OP? Did you get a good result with the Cantu?

I'm going with my natural 2a/2b waves too, after years of blow drying them straight (and my hair promptly going frizzy in any kind of dampness in the air).

At the moment I'm a bit wild, messy and frizzy (two wash days in) - I used Pantene curl mousse stuff. I have bought some Cantu curl cream, and a diffuser, in case I have to dry my hair quickly!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2021 14:40

By the end of the day I looked like frizzy triangle so I think I might need to use more product. I'll have a proper play with it and experiment. Washed and blow dried today as it's cold outside Grin

Have you got a diffuser? Definitely a bit chilly to be walking around with damp hair today. Mine's on day two and seems a bit less frizzy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2021 16:31

I think I have somewhere,I think one came with my hairdryer hope I didn't chuck it. Good shout, I'd forgotten about difusers, not used on since the 80sGrin

I know! I did throw mine away, so had to buy one.
TheFabledSnake · 08/08/2021 19:47

It will take a few wash cycles until your hair settles, I find. At first mine made me look like a lion but then my hair started to get used to the natural wave pattern and accepted it, so don't be put off!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2021 20:10

Ok, thanks!

So, I've given up with the Cantu, looked great while it was wet and damp just went frizzy when it was dry BUT I have discovered that VO5 maximum hold mousse is amazing and works really well.

I did find a diffuser but it didn't fit my hairdryer so no idea how old it is ConfusedGrin

I bought a universal diffuser for my hairdryer - I was away for the weekend, took just the diffuser, and it fitted on the hotel hairdryer too. Handy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/08/2021 16:21

Oooo thanks for that. Do you have a link?

It’s a lot about how you apply the products too. Have a look on Instagram / you tube - manes by Mel is excellent , I also like curlicueLu and wavycurly.

I tried a few and settled on a mix of Innersense / bouncecurl products that seem to suit my hair (2b-3a). There’s a great website called naturalistic products with a huge range.
