Black shirts on men

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2007 10:32

I want to buy dh a black shirt as I find them sexy. He used to have quite a thick one made of black denim which went with his jeans but I cannot find anything like that in the shops now.

I did find shirts made of thin cord which would have been nice but they were not in black, only navy blue.

  1. Does anyone know where I can buy a similar shirt in black?
  1. More to the point, if you buy a cotton shirt in black (ie the sort that could be worn with a tie)

a) what should it be worn with? Jeans surely would not be right or would they?

b) would it only look good with a tie as that is not the look I am after.

Don;t bother with a tie...I bought dh a black poloneck thin jumper a few years ago, and he looked like the Black Magic man. Sadly now he looks like the man who ate all the black magic...

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2007 10:38

LOL.

So you would recommend a cotton shirt (I dont know what you call them, but the sort of shirt that goes with a suit) and no tie?

And wear it with what trousers?

my dp looks sexy in his black shirt.

you need cotton- not denim.

try mexx, next, those types of places.

jeans or wool trousers in charcoal - tapered/skinny fit

Tie in black or white but might be a bit chantelle's husband (what's his name?)

captainmummy · 27/11/2007 10:41

Black jeans? I like the heavy denim shirt look, and black cords wuold look good too. If you wear them with jeans/chinos don't get too long so they don't need to be tucked in, (a la jeremy clarkson). Def no tie, or if really necessary, buy a thin one, like jude law.

DaDaDa · 27/11/2007 10:42

Muji are good for plain black shirts. Cheap but they don't wash or iron (but then who irons?!) particularly well.

DaDaDa · 27/11/2007 10:43

Oh, and jeans are fine as long as it's untucked.

Wouldn't have first hand knowledge of that

Surely you'd have to have an enormous belly for that to be the case?

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2007 10:47

OMG, the thought of my dh wearing a shirt that is untucked! Honestly, that would never occur to him! But I know what you mean about the Jeremy Clarkson look. Dh is not as tubby as JC though. Oh dear, will he really look stupid with it tucked in? He does not have the flair to wear it untucked. I think he would tuck his vests into his pants if he still wore vests!

Try River Island - DS1 lurves the open-neck-black-shirt-with-jeans look and he has def got at least 1 from there recently.

WendyWeber · 27/11/2007 10:57

(He does tuck them in sometimes but his jeans are very low-slung!)

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2007 10:58

Thanks WW. How old is ds1? Dh is 40!

19!!!

But he is a big lad, not a skinny little thing.

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2007 11:00

Just worried that I am trying to dress my dh too young. But black shirts are so sexy IMO.

As long as he doesn't wear it unbuttoned halfway down...

I bet he'll look great

DaDaDa · 27/11/2007 11:03

How about one of these in black?

MyChemicalToilet · 27/11/2007 11:08

Debenhams online have loads - seems to be their theme at the moment. Thomas Nash brand are inexpensive.

NO to ties. DP wears tucked in, with black pinstripe suit trews. It is his Friday work outfit, just in case we should ever go out after work. His equivalent of a LBD I suppose.

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2007 11:12

Hmmm, still wondering if I understand the style implications of this. I am after a casual look, not semi-smart, Friday work outfit. Despite moaning at me about wearing jeans too much, dh rarely wears anything else at the weekend either.... Will check out Debenhams.

This is the look to avoid!

elliephant · 27/11/2007 11:17

got Dh a lovely black shirt in zara recently. its glazed cotton iykwim and very slightly shaped so it can be worn loose without looking too baggy.Dh has a bit of a belly, like myself but i think it looks great with dark jeans.

WendyWeber · 27/11/2007 11:19

River Island - there are 4 pages of men's long-sleeved shirts, the very last is plain black and there are a couple of striped ones along the way.

MrsFlora · 27/11/2007 11:25

if he is bald he might end up looking like a bouncer... Have u noticed how many bouncers wear black shirt, with ties and are bald?
