Fucking hell. Primark sizes

Are they unbelievably small or have I gained two dress sizes overnight?

Bought a pair of admittedly 100% cotton dad jeans in a size bigger than my usual because, well primark basically and can't do the fuckers up!

Last time I shop at primark with my DD let me tell you!

At the start of the summer I went in there to get a load of t shirts. The sizes, in order, were xs (4-6), S (6-8), M (10-12)!!! I asked the girl what happened to all the sizes 8-10 and she couldn’t give me an answer!

I stopped using Primark for bottoms as find all their trousers, jeans and shorts to be completely sized wrongly. Oddly their tops teem to be sized correctly

Interesting to hear about the cutting process and why the sizing is likely so random!

Went yesterday with DD and we were laughing at how noticeably different the sizes were across their ranges. She could have been anything between a 6 or a large depending on the item....we didn't want to try anything on so quite difficult to gauge what would fit!!

On another note, they were obviously really struggling with stock levels in our local branch. Barely anything left in some sizes and very little choice of summer basics!

GrumpyTerrier · 24/07/2021 10:06

It's not vanity sizing--- it is sizing so random that you don't know what to pick. I got one dress in a 14 and one in a 20 last time I was in there and the 20 was tighter than the 14.

TroysMammy · 24/07/2021 11:00

The socks always fit.

goose1964 · 24/07/2021 11:10

I'm a 16/18 and have loads in 14/16 not so much 18/20 as they tend to be too big.

OneForTheRoadThen · 24/07/2021 11:18

They have an XS which is size 6-8 and a S which is 10-12. I wish there was a size i between

honeybuns007 · 25/07/2021 07:02

I understand poor cutting process affects accuracy but I wonder how they sew the pieces together. If you sewed a bigger piece to a smaller piece it would end up all over the place.

ZombeaArthur · 25/07/2021 07:06

The pajamas are particularly amusing. I usually wear a 10, but xxs pajamas are always swimming on me.

Jacketspudd · 25/07/2021 07:06

I got a size 8 Matalan dress yesterday and it fits like a glove. I loved it and it was the last one.

I’m a 12-14 though so it definitely shouldn’t fit!

I didn't understand that post. A machine stamps out pieces so they are all the same.
honeybuns007 · 25/07/2021 08:11

@Bryonyshcmyony if you picture one sheet of fabric being stamped out, it will be a perfect replica of the stamp. If you imagine a stack of 100 sheets of fabric being stamped, the fabric slides and splays as the pressure is applied so the accuracy of the pieces is compromised. They get squished and lose their shape.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 25/07/2021 08:18

Totally random. I'm 5'9", dependably size 14-16, and have sizes from xs to 18 in my wardrobe from there. Most recent purchase was a size 10 dress that fits brilliantly. While changing rooms haven't been open I've ignored the labels and just held to stuff up in mirrors to guess what I need.

LadyJJ · 25/07/2021 09:48

Last year me and DD2 who's 21 both bought new multipack knicks from Primark, my L ones were a good 4 inches smaller than her M ones, which were so wide neither of us could wear them.
I also have two Primark dresses (both the same style diff colour) and the 10 is much bigger than the 14...

Haffiana · 25/07/2021 12:00

I have been told by a clothes buyer for M&S that the reason for the size variation is NOT the mass cutting (which would cause clothes to be unable to be stitched together) but simply that they will put whatever size label on an item that is needed to make up the numbers required in an order. Therefore if they have only 10 thousand small, and the order needs 20 thousand, then they will use any other size and just sew in a S label.
It happens even with M&S garments...

omgthepain · 25/07/2021 12:09

Primark is cheap and nasty you get what you pay for I'm afraid 😳

You'd probably find they're a much better fit in a better shop

I don't mean designer just somewhere with proper sizes

TrampolineForMrKite · 25/07/2021 12:19

I’ve learnt something today about the cutting! You live and learn. Thanks Mumsnet.

Boogiewoody · 25/07/2021 12:29

I find them OK? Actually quite big. I'm a 12 and the 12-14 is too big so I need the 10-12 sometimes even the 8-10. I got a blouse from there a few weeks ago that I sized down in. I haven't bought jeans in there for years and I did always need the 14 to be fair.

Not as bad as M&S where I have 2 pairs of jeans that are the same style and size but holding them against each other, one is 2/3 inches smaller!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/07/2021 12:34

I bought a multi pack of knickers from M&S. They were all different shapes and sizes. Primark is not the only culprit.

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2021 13:07

@TooBigForMyBoots

Primark sizes are random as fuck.Grin
They really are. I don’t know why the bother with size labels.
Abcsefg · 05/09/2023 21:50

Aren't you lucky.

hdbs17 · 06/09/2023 10:48

I bought some £5 leggings in Primark, just to cover the last few weeks of this pregnancy so I went a size up - normally get a L as a 14/16 so went XL.
They're way too big, even pulled over my huge bump!

I bought a half zip jumper as online it looked a nice length, went L and when I tried it on it absolutely swamped me and came down to my knees! I'm not even short!!

I give up.
