Where to buy a dress for a funeral in July?

My Dad has just died and I would like to buy a really nice dress for the funeral in 10 days. But where can I get a good black dress in July? I am not fashion savvy at all and have no idea. Live fairly centrally in London though so could go to west end next week. I suppose a dept store the best bet for options but can anyone recommend one which might have a good black dress or two at this time of year? We're not a dressy family at all but my dad actually really liked it when I dressed up so I thought I'd make an effort in his honour.

Sorry to hear of your loss OP , and it’s lovely that you want to dress up for your dad .

John Lewis online or on the high street .

Lots of black here www.johnlewis.com/browse/women/womens-dresses/black/_/N-flwZ1z141fu

Oh thank you @SpeckledyHen that does look like a decent selection. I will try John Lewis prob on Tuesday. I'm guessing the Oxford St one is the biggest so will try there. So glad I asked here now!

I'm so sorry for your loss @kalidasa. I also have a funeral next week so did a very recent search. I'm wearing something vintage now, but if I hadn't had that, I think I would have bought this dress dress

it's also from John Lewis, but they only have a 10 left online. I hope you find something you like!

Watto1 · 11/07/2021 17:18

Next always have a good selection of formal dresses. Sorry for your loss

Uniqlo.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Boden are usually good for black dresses.

kalidasa · 11/07/2021 17:23

Thanks for all these suggestions! Sounds look I should be able to find something.

So sorry for your loss. Does it have to be black? I have a funeral next week and found a perfect dark navy blue dress. It’s formal and smart but pretty and can be used again if I want to . Navy as an option might widen your possibilities 😊

kalidasa · 11/07/2021 19:36

Thanks @makingmyway10, I think I'd rather do black. I do have a couple of smart navy dresses already so could fall back on that if I have no luck but would like to find something black if possible. We're moving to Paris anyway in a fortnight so a black dress will get plenty of wear I expect!

So sorry for your loss OP. COS have got a lot of black/navy dresses in their sale at the moment which would be suitable. Or, as others have suggested, John Lewis, Next or even M&S.

But where can I get a good black dress in July?

Are you going with black as the dress code? If so plenty of recommendations here and navy/grey/lilac are also common mourning colours in the UK.
However I ask because having attended /organised funerals in covid restricted times I found that suggesting people should feel free to wear favourite colours they associated with memories of the person was a small way of adding some extra personalisation and celebrating the life as much as saying goodbye.

catinboots21 · 11/07/2021 23:58

OP I'm sorry about your dad - I also lost mine a couple of weeks ago. Me and mum went round all the local huge shops and could t find a thing.

I ordered a black maxi from boohoo which fits perfectly and is lovely - so very lucky. Mum has ordered something from John Lewis online which she is collecting tomorrow and fingers crossed it will be what she wants.

I would suggest just looking online and maybe buying several things and returning. It's such a pita you think the big dept stores would have a basic selection of black dresses???

Lots of love and hope all goes well x

Sorry to hear of your loss.
I've ordered this one www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/clothing/dresses-tunics/sunny-terrace-organic-cotton-ecovero-dress-black.htm for a funeral, looks to be a lightweight seersucker type fabric, which hopefully will be cool

Ariela · 12/07/2021 00:07

meant to add has POCKETS!

FarFromTheMaddingITCrowd · 12/07/2021 00:24

Fenwick should be good for this, too.

Some big discounts online, so you might want to order and return in store in case they don't have your size due to the sale.

I got a lovely black dress from Lipsy at Christmas time 2018 for my dad's funeral. It was against all the odds really as it was Xmas glittery going out outfits on the shelves. I decided that if I couldn't find the dress in the colour I wanted, I would buy my dress in the style I wanted and dye it. Thankfully it didn't come to that

makingmyway10 · 12/07/2021 09:15

@kalidasa I understand. Good luck
I hope it goes well and good luck for Paris.

kalidasa · 12/07/2021 09:22

Thanks all. I've booked an appointment at Peter Jones in Sloane Square for Wednesday morning, explaining that I need a black dress, in the hope that they'll be able to bring me all the available options and save me traipsing around tearfully for hours! The funeral is a week after that so if no luck I'll still have time to look elsewhere/try ordering online.
