new earrings itchy

they're reacting with something in my ear. is there anything i can do in the short term before i try and change the connections?

really want to wear them

I have been advised in the past to try painting the backs and posts with a couple of coats of clear nail varnish. They must have nickel in them. I am allergic to everything except solid gold and silver. Needless to say, I don't have many earrings.

I haven't actually tried this, having chucked out the ones I was allergic to, but it might be worth a go.
