NQC's bragging about market stall purchases thread ...

This morning I went out and 'did' the local market. I bought:

  • cotton club halter top dress, really nice, crinoline thing underneath, with some beading, black with white detailing. £3
  • a weird sweater, plainish, charcoal, £2
  • a long FCUK cotton skirt that looks like stained glass £15
  • a Miss selfridge skirt, cotton, short, £5
  • a weird black skirt that looks quite gypsy-esque £5

The halter top dress absolutely works and fits (no chance to try it on at the market!), and will do for either the MN meet or the big dinner/dance thing on Friday (DH's work), if I'm invited to it.

I am feeling very smug about this - it's such a random weird market, but there are truly lovely things there.

I am pleased enough about the £3 halter top dress that I may post pics, even!

sounds good. The markets around here are full of horrible tack.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2007 12:44

It varies a lot, around here. Most have horrible tack, this one has a good amount of that, but also some decent stuff, too.

citylover · 24/11/2007 20:05

Which market is it NQC - might like to visit as I am in SE London

NotQuiteCockney · 25/11/2007 06:43

This is Roman Road Market - Roman Road, east of St Stephen's Street, in E3.

I WANT TO GO THERE! Fondly remember RR Market from my teen years.

NQC, what on earth are you doing up so early on a Sunday? Are you stroking that dress?

NotQuiteCockney · 25/11/2007 07:34

I am always up early, I did go to sleep stupidly early as I have a cold.

Ooh how exciting!! Thanks - I think I might pay a visit next Sat as I think ex H has the DCs. And as I also want to go to Farringdon later in the afternoon think it might be a good move to visit there first.

I used to live in Bow years ago and might have gone there then, certainly went along the Roman Road. (And got my wedding shoes made in Bethnal Green).

But now just sarf of river near Thames.

On the subject of markets is Walthamstow market worth a visit?

tigermoth · 25/11/2007 16:54

There's used to be a good stall selling new French Connection clothes at knock down prices (£3 - £10.00 for s lot of the stuff)in Petticoat Lane market. Don't know if it's there still.

Mercy · 25/11/2007 17:09

Citylover, imo Walthamstow market is not good for clothes if that's what you're after. But it has its good points.

I used to love going to markets however crap they were (pre-kids).

I'm racking my brains trying to remember one in SE London which I was really disappointed in.

I'm a bit snowed under, but will probably post them eventually. The dress really does fit beautifully and looks lovely, though, I'm v pleased with it.

Which reminds me, what do I do for a bra? Go without? I'm pretty smallish, probably it's ok without?

The FCUK stuff was all £15 a piece. I've not tried clothes shopping in Petticoat Lane market.

Nips ahoy probably ok for MN meet up but not for Dh's work do. I suggest bra tbh. It is winter now.

I couldn't even contemplate a halter-neck dress sans bra in winter - you are obviously made of sterner stuff.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/11/2007 20:50

Oh, I'll be wearing a throw or wrap or something, will dig something out.

And the top is a) black and b) reasonably thick (cotton not silk).

It really is v halter top, and I don't think I have anything that would do the job. Well, I have one halter top type lingerie thing, but I suspect it would show. And it doesn't do much anyway.

My only other option, I think, is those stick on bra cups, but I'm not sure what they do ...

get a multiway bra and then use it to make a halterneck bra. does that make sense?

NotQuiteCockney · 26/11/2007 14:42

Hmmm, it really is low between my boobs. I don't think any bra will work.

I don't really need one, anyway, boobs are at most a 36B, really not that big.

Will post pics of dress on me later today for MN opinion. Ack, must shave pits, figure out jewellery, etc etc. Shoes. Ack.

Oh, we are deffo going - I have to flail about sorting childcare, but we are going! Well, DH was always going, but I'm going too.

NotQuiteCockney · 26/11/2007 14:43

I have no time now, anyway, but will do pics later and get advice, prob start a new thread. DH will be in suit + tie, so it's not black tie or anything like it.

NotQuiteCockney · 26/11/2007 20:00

Ok, started new thread, with pics, here.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 26/11/2007 20:01

Oh, I only did a pic of the dress, can post pics of the other purchases, too, but am flailing about what to wear with the dress.
