Can I wear trainers to smart restaurant?

It seems so long since I went anywhere that presented me with any fashion dilemmas, I think I've lost my basic common sense.

In a couple of weeks' time I'm going for a smart London lunch with a couple of friend. It's not somewhere with a dress code, more trendy laid back but with well known chef type place. I'm planning on wearing a long midi ( almost maxi) navy silky dress and shite trainers. Does that sound OK? It's the trainers I'm unsure about. I could put shoes on: I've got some quite nice gold sandals or some tan leather low wedges that might be better. I'm mid 50s if that helps.

I’d maybe go for something better than shite trainers Grin

I think white will be fine!

I know that was a typo, but it really made me laugh!

Iamthewombat · 03/07/2021 11:48

And the WHITE trainers sound fine!

piratehugs · 03/07/2021 11:48

I would, no problem.

DonLewis · 03/07/2021 11:48

Awesome typo! I'd wear sandals but I'm sure the trainers will be fine. Have you checked the website for any dress code?

ShirleyPhallus · 03/07/2021 11:50

I went to somewhere like this recently and about 80% of the women were dressed exactly like this. The remaining 20% were in tiny dresses and 8” heels and looked amazing but made me very glad for the comfort of my trainers Grin

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 03/07/2021 11:50

Go on, treat yourself to some replacement non-shite trainers.

How often do you type that for your phone to decide it’s more plausible than white?

Changemaname1 · 03/07/2021 11:54

Shite or white trainers 😂

White sound fine to me with the dress

insancerre · 03/07/2021 11:57

Shite trainers should not be worn anywhere

onlyconnect · 03/07/2021 12:04

I can't believe I actually proud read that too because my typing is generally so shite!

onlyconnect · 03/07/2021 12:04

And, funnily enough, "shite" isn't a word I generally use so God knows where it came from.

Done it again: proof read

I'd be tempted, but I wouldn't be brave enough.

MouldyPotato · 03/07/2021 15:31

Get some nice shoes

Notavegan · 03/07/2021 15:46

Everyone is casual these days where I live, another UK city. I think trainers fine if not shite.

Billandben444 · 03/07/2021 15:51

I think gleaming white trainers are fine. Wearing a dress will make you look smart anyway and once you sit down nobody will know anyway. Have a great time!

LakeShoreD · 03/07/2021 15:58

I’m going out tonight in central London- quite nice restaurant and cocktail bar and I will be wearing trainers but they’re not shite ones 🤣

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/07/2021 16:03

Now see, I would actually be in shite trainers cos it's usually beaten up old Vans on my feet Grin

I say that smart dress, white trainer combo is genuine smart casual and it'll be fine.

GiveMeCoffeeandTV · 03/07/2021 16:21

Totally normal in London trendy restaurants and bars! Anything goes. Have a lovely time!

beingajen2 · 03/07/2021 16:22

Shite trainers Grin great typo.

I think white trainers are fine is a trendy London restaurant. Given the top half is quite smart. And they'll be under the table after your entry.

Odisia · 03/07/2021 16:29

I went on a museum visit with a friend recently and then to a nice restaurant for lunch and wore almost exactly the outfit you describe. Absolutely fine, and I knew I'd be walking a lot so wanted comfortable feet. Also in my 50s.

My trainers aren't shite though. I quite like them.

Hairymoohead · 03/07/2021 18:14

Tis the lovely thing about London restaurants, it's not school - the owners don't tell the customers what to wear. enjoy your evening.

Chewbecca · 03/07/2021 19:25

Shite trainers - NO
White trainers - YES

Ummmm there are lots of restaurants in London with dress codes….
Hairymoohead · 03/07/2021 20:01

@ShirleyPhallus Not the restaurants with the best food - they don't need to tell their guests how to dress.
