What jeans now?

I'm still wearing skinnies, I know I need to stop! But I don't know what to wear. I'm 45, 5'8" size 10. All I see are unflattering high wasted, baggy affairs! What do I need to try? My style is casual (trainers, boots etc)

I still wear skinnies. I need to be able to tuck them into my New Rocks. Don't care about fashion! Comfort and practicality win Grin

I’ve really tried to embrace the new jean style of mom/girlfriend etc, but honestly I look like a Bananarama reject and at least two sizes larger than I am,and what the hell do I put on my feet? My trainers make me look like I’m in a clown outfit, I feel completely wrong and not like myself at all. Skinny jeans may not be the height of fashion but you can literally wear any style of shoe, trainer or boot they are just so easy and practical, I would be happy to go with a relaxed skinny but have yet to find any I like.

strawberrydonuts · 02/07/2021 19:14

Why do you "need" to stop wearing skinny jeans? Wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

Notavegan · 02/07/2021 19:16

I just switched to boyfriend jeans rolled up with fashion trainers or DM boots. I was surprised how flattering they were after years of skinnies

@Luckingfovely thanks for the link to that style guide... I think.

I've gone and ordered some Arket jeans as I'm trying to find the perfect cropped pair. I ordered several pairs from Zara recently but they all went back as at 5ft4 cropped jeans are often not cropped enough for me. We'll see...

Agree about the skinnies, they're just sooo easy to pair with shoes/boots in all weathers.

@Notavegan I relegated a pair of boyfriend jeans to gardening/DIY wear. I might roll them up and give them another go...

WeirdArchitecture · 02/07/2021 21:29

I down wear them anymore, after years of feeling weighted down and uncomfortable, ive simply stopped. I do have a pair of great denim jeggings by JCrew but they only come out in the depths of winter.

I don't think they're necessary really, but that's just me, and sometimes wonder why they're so popular considering they're so restricting and heavy. On the plus side, they do seem to go with literally any kind of top and coat.

Skinnies can be uncomfortable.
Mom jeans make my gut look huge even though its pretty flat.
Flares are not always weather appropriate, and still fit like skinnies at the top, so, restricting.
I did like skinny black jeans but just ditched them for leggings and don't miss them.

But maybe im weird.

kowari · 02/07/2021 22:40

I find jeans more comfortable than clingy clothing. Mine weigh 500g, I don't think that's heavy.

kowari · 02/07/2021 22:46

I couldn't wear leggings. I don't know where I would put my phone and change and keys, and hands. I also feel exposed and self conscious.

cocoloco987 · 03/07/2021 04:10

If skinnies are out then the shops certainly are not reflecting that. I'd say about 80% of jeans in the young trendyish shops such as h&m are still skinnies. Why would they have so many if no one was wearing them?!

Standrewsschool · 03/07/2021 04:29

If you like skinnies, and skinnies like you, wear them. Some body shapes will always suit skinnies. There’s a lot of stylish women still wearing them.

samthebordercollie · 03/07/2021 06:48

I'm 55, the same height as you (5'8) and size 8, always worn skinnies but never liked wearing them in summer. I recently went shopping with DD (needed second opinion!) and ended up buying a pair of mom jeans and a pair of boyfriend jeans. Never thought the style would suit me but they both look fine with trainers and sandals and they are definitely a lot more comfortable in warmer weather.

ShakespearesSisters · 03/07/2021 07:29

I was looking at that glamour article. What they need is to say the best pair for a slightly overweight mum with a post c section type overhang that bulges out just above the crotch.
Currently I stick with skinnies (my legs are the only non overweight bit of me) and a slightly longer length top that bears the bulge when I left my arms.

HelenHywater · 03/07/2021 07:39

That article's quite good. I actually have a pair of the Other Stories Favourite jean which are very flattering. The Arket ones are nice too.

I have a few pairs of the whistles barrel jeans.

High waisted jeans are flattering I think. Skinny jeans just look dated now (and they were one of the staples in my wardrobe) .

I also have a pair of Agolde jeans - which my teens are coveting.

I saw someone in a pub in a pair of Levis which I thought looked really good.

QuentininQuarantino · 03/07/2021 21:28

I’ve got lots of jeans, but my absolute favourite are the old Levi 501 CT fit which is exactly what is in fashion now except flattering, yet inexplicably discontinued. The 501 are an okay replacement but not the same.

I also really like the Zara “mini flare” which isn’t really a flare at all but a crop slightly wider leg.
