HELP! What to wear for a wedding the week before christmas?

Alliebongo · 22/11/2007 19:13

I have no idea what to wear. Everything in the shops seems to be geared towards Christmas Parties ie velvet and sequins.
I am a tub of lard - size 14 with short legs, size 16 top due to large norks, skint and desperate. I want to look nice as many of the people there are minted and haven't seen me for a few years and I am a stone heavier. Please help me....

you can wera velvet to a wedding you know

time of day? venue? (ie draughty church or warm hotel) anything in wardrobe already? colour preference?

Alliebongo · 22/11/2007 19:58

mrs badger i love you. I look hideous in velvet. I have nothing other than jeans and one pair of old black trousers. It is all at a swanky old country hotel i believe, so I am not sure if i should buy a nice coat also as all i have is a casual parker style one. I really would rather stay at home as I feel fat and gross at the mo, but it is one of dh's best and oldest pals

I cannot wear dresses due to bingo wings and large norks

Maidamess · 22/11/2007 20:16

Why couldn't you wear a lovely wrap dress, the long sleeves would cover your bingo's and the v-neck would show off the norks. Wear a fab pair of heels, dangly earrings and bobs your uncle. Wear a pashmina if you want to cover up a bit.....

MrsBadger · 22/11/2007 20:18

no need for new coat if it's all indoors - wear any old one and dicth in cloakroom at first possible moment

you need smart new blakc trous and an eyecathcing tunic top to showcase cleavage and hide wings

DaisyMoo · 22/11/2007 20:19

How about this. Very seasonal and nobody would notice your norks!

I have two weddings around xmas and have bought a stunning velvet dress coat from Phase Eight. Will add high high heels and pale gold dress underneath and lots of twinkly jewellery to catch the candlelight that there always is at winter weddings! Coat will keep me warm in freezing cold church as well.

JolieGirl · 22/11/2007 20:27

And just to add - size 14/16 does NOT = a tub of lard girl!!! There are some beautiful outfits out there that will suit your size and shape to perfection. I know it might be daunting but have you got a large store near you with a (free) personal shopping service? They would really inspire you and give you the confidence to try things on you would never normally even look at twice, I guarantee it. Other than that take a good friend out with you for the day, someone you really trust and who is someone you consider to be honest and stylish. Good luck

TillyBookClub · 22/11/2007 20:32

I'm in same situation with wedding 2 days before Xmas (plus will be 5 months pregnant by then, oh joy)

My plans are

  1. beg, borrow or steal a well fitting black dress, with short sleeves, v-neck and to the knee

  2. wear opaque black tights that are good quality (Wolford or some tummy control ones are good) and wear the nicest pair of heels you have. In fact, spend money on those if you can and borrow the dress. Patent ones are good and trendy.

  3. get one or two seriously eye-catching gold cocktail rings from Accessorize or Topshop or similar. Topshop has a load that are about £8/10 and look much more expensive

  4. if you have any pennies left, get a properly nice haircut/hairdo

I reckon you can do black at a winter wedding - I got married in December and half the guests were in black with gold.

Good luck...x

MorocconOil · 22/11/2007 20:32

Have you looked in Monsoon? That's where I always go for a wedding outfit and I have been size 14/16 for several years now. I have found it especially good for winter occasions.

MrsBadger · 22/11/2007 21:36

add a shrug and this would knock 'em dead - SIL is same shape as you and a similar dress absoluteely transformed her

JustJaamy · 22/11/2007 21:47

Hi

I am in same situation where I have a wedding 10 days before Christmas and nothing to wear. Actually ordered this from Debenhams. Arrived today and looks OK on but have absolutely no jacket to wear with it and one that looks like it might go with it is £75 . Thought it made a nice change from just black.

Anyway, it looks to be similar shaped to some suggestions on here so wondered whether it might be something you'd consider, Allie? I too am top heavy but am quite tall so dress falls just below my knee. Also it's half price!!!!

Alliebongo · 22/11/2007 22:58

thanks for all your kind messages and suggestions. I am not very good at dressing up. I feel uncomfortable and old fashioned. I am 31 so want to look trendy but not muttony. I like the wrap dresses, that would be a nice idea, especially the bravissimo one, as we have a store in Cambridge. I will also forage in Monsoon.. No if i wore a frock, would I wear tights and shoes? You really have to spoon feed me, I cam crapola
