How can I get my hair colour right (to cover greys)? What do I need to ask for next time?

I’ve got naturally dark mousey brown hair. It’s very dull so I’ve always liked a few highlights. Now the greys are coming through more & after months of having no hair colour over lockdown I thought I’d go for a full head of highlights with a tint to catch any greys in between.
I don’t really like it now. It’s very blonde & the tint looks almost orangey. Now it’s had a few weeks growth & the contrast to my roots is dreadful so I’m booked in for root regrowth with the tint. I want to alter the tint so it’s not so orangey.

I know it’a my own fault as I showed the stylist some pics but I just don’t think the type of blonde suits my skin tone. I have olivey toned skin but now i look washed out. The hair is too bright.

The look that I do like is a kind of balayage look where the hair is darker, closer to my natural (not grey) colour with some nice lighter strands. When I asked once about this look they said it is very hard & time consuming to achieve &and very expensive, whereas to look at it you’d think it looks really natural.

Basically I don’t know what on earth to ask for but I’ve got to get these roots done as it looks awful.
Can anyone suggest what I need to do? Do I need to ask for a darker tint or do I need something like lowlights to make it leas harsh? I just want to find the right thing for me & stick to it.

If anyone else has olive skin, brown eyes & dyes their hair to cover the greys please can you tell me what you do? If you could add a photo of your hair that would be so helpful for me. Thank you

This is the kind of colour I think would suit my skin tone. Is this balayage does anyone know? I will show them this when I go next time but not sure if they’ll be able to change it much as the previous colour is so bright!
