How often do you do it?

I used to dye it almost every 2 weeks as my hair is dark and the grey looks very obvious. Since I have been using this product - i get about 5 weeks between dyes. www.amazon.com/Clairol-Temporary-Touch-Up-Concealing-Powder/dp/B078KFD2JD?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

6/7 weeks at the hairsdressers. Root spray when it starts to annoy me before then

PoppityPop · 07/06/2021 23:32

Every 3 weeks. My hair is very dark.

Grow it out! Silver/grey hair is fashionable now. Look online at Grombre

Winterfairy23 · 07/06/2021 23:35

I do my roots at home with professional dye every 6 weeks. When I was paying the hairdresser it was every 12 weeks.

choosername1234 · 07/06/2021 23:36

I use a box dye at home & it probably needs doing every 6-8 weeks

Providora · 07/06/2021 23:47

About 6 weekly with root spray in between. My hair is darkish - around shade 6 in box dye.

Elouera · 07/06/2021 23:55

Every 4-5 weeks. I use l'oreal castings, which is a semi and supposed to wash out after 24 washes. I've never let it go that long though. I don't use a permanent colour due to the more obvious line it leaves in the hair.

I've never let my hair grow out, but assume its at least 50% grey. The above still works great, I buy when its 2 for £12 and my hair is a chestnut colour.

John Freida Defy Grey is still covering mine, it comes as a normal shampoo and conditioner so can use every day and blends in the greys pretty well. It works best when using both products but the colour holds OK if I only use one of them. The one I use is for brunettes, but I don't think it'd give brilliant coverage on really dark hair. it's usually 3 for 2 in Boots.

i was having to do it every 3 weeks. i have now given up the battle, was needing to use root spray after 2 weeks.

TableSetting · 08/06/2021 06:35

Similar to @Snorkelface but I use Plantur 39 Brown colour shampoo and conditioner once a week.
I leave the shampoo on for 2 mins and the conditioner on for as long as I can (often 10 mins). I do first bit over the bath so slightly towel dry just to stop it dripping before adding conditioner. I usually clean bathroom or eat breakfast whilst waiting for colour to take and then wash off. Have decided to stop all other colouring as this does enough to give my grey a blondish/light brown colour. My hair looks much more natural than when I was dyeing it and never quite got it right. Strangely I find it can give a slight yellowish tinge if I forget and leave shampoo on too long but the conditioner can be left on ages to tone darker.
Interesting that there are more of these products around now - be good to try others.

Snorkelface · 08/06/2021 08:04

Thanks @TableSetting - good to know of another similar product. I thought they grey would've won by now and I'd have needed something with more coverage but still good. I have no patience when it comes to actual hair dye.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 08/06/2021 08:10

I went lighter rather than darker which means I only need to get highlights done every 3 months as the greys aren't so noticeable. When I was dying my hair brown I found that even the permanent colours faded quite quickly but the blonde doesn't seem to fade.

5-6 weekly root touch up then comb through at hairdressers
Once or twice a year I have a full head dye - last year didn’t need one as hadn’t been on any hot sunny holidays

PinkTonic · 08/06/2021 09:51

6 weeks at the hairdressers and some kind of root treatment in between depending on how it looks and where I’m going. Could be a spray, could be a clairol touch up kit. The upkeep is insane but I’m not ready to go grey yet. It’s all very well saying it’s fashionable but it’s ageing on a woman my age, not edgy.
