Black or navy midi dress for a petite not slim shape

Oh an I'm 50, which I think it's relevant, because the minute I put on a 'ditsy' dress, I look 60. Also, big patterns swamp me.

So I am looking for a decent quality dress (cotton or viscose, not linen, def not polyester), sort of midi length with sleeves - not sleeveless, or cap, or bardot, or anything voluminous.

Shirt style dresses are not the best for me because I am short but also curvaceous, so I am a size 10 from the waist up but a size 12 form the waist down, which usually makes shirt style dresses gather at the back.

Not too casual (i.e. long t-shirt style), so I can wear it to work.

I would really appreciate specific links rather than suggesting shops. Thank you!!

You're not going to be happy with me but I can't post full links, next have some that may be suitable.

What sort of budget did you have in mind?

This website has a number of dresses that fit your description. I have one and the quality is very high but it is mostly polyester which grates for the best part of £200.
Both the M&S and John Lewis website allow you to filter on sleeve length which make them a good place to start.

I just bought this from Uniqlo, which am quite happy with. I am 5"7 and a small size 12. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-smooth-cotton-french-sleeved-long-dress-433667.html?dwvar_433667_color=COL68&dwvar_433667_size=SMA001&cgid=IDw-dresses-jumpsuits
Very plain mind you, but I am going to dress it up with accessories. V soft cotton. There are other similar dresses on the site.

I can't imagine paying 200 quid for polyester either.

Jaeger used to do really nice fabrics so I'm hoping M&S follow suit but I struggle to find any website that uses good fabrics where the dresses don't start at circa £500.

I’m a very similar size to you and have just bought this. It is stunning on. www.frenchconnection.com/product/woman-collections-dresses/71qbh/aiden-drape-contrast-shirt-dress.htm?clr=e81717
