Finally found a solution to dyed dark hair that fades to orange

I have tried everything over the years. Absolutely everything. Blue shampoo, purple shampoo, expensive toners, you name it. Every single time I have my hair dyed brunette (I'm naturally brunette), whether I dye it myself or go to various super-expensive hairdressers, my hair hair fades to brassy orange awfulness within a few weeks, especially in the summer and I HATE it. The only thing that remotely worked was Aveda Black Malva conditioner but now that's been discontinued.

Anyway. Turns out I needed, not blue, not purple toner, but GREEN. I've found Matrix Dark Envy and it actually bloody works!! It totally counteracts the red orange from dark hair and leaves it properly ASH brown. It's about a tenner from Amazon. You need the hair mask, leave it on for ten minutes (use gloves, it's messy), rinse off and your hair is dark brown again and in lovely condition.

I don't work for them, but I do want lots of people to buy it so they don't discontinue it Grin
I often see posts on here asking how to get rid of orange/brass from brunette hair so thought I'd share Smile

Where were you a week ago??? I’ve just had the orange cut off the bottom of my hair, first hair cut post lock down and I couldn’t bare to get locked into the cycle of not loving it but not being able to leave it orange. Sigh.

Plum525 · 31/05/2021 16:44

Ooh! Do you use the conditioner, shampoo or toner...or all three?

Yellowtulips33 · 31/05/2021 16:47

Lol, sorry @Unsuremover

@Plum525 I just use the mask. The shampoo is supposed to be colour depositing too but didn't work for me. The conditioner is not colour depositing so not sure what the point of it is. It's the Mask that is the mutt's nuts.

I’ve just ordered! Thank you

Bluntness100 · 31/05/2021 16:55

Me too, I’ll give it a crack. My hair is always going brassy. It’s really annoying.

Thanks op!

AngCalv · 31/05/2021 16:57

Thanks for sharing your experience, @Yellowtulips33 it is a problem for me too. I'll order it!

Yellowtulips33 · 31/05/2021 16:57

You're welcome. Hope it works for you too.

Thanks for this! I have found the Charles Worthington blue shampoo to be the best thing I've tried so far, it's got a greenish tinge, almost a dark turquoise, I leave it on for a minute or two, not too long or my scalp goes teal! There's no matching conditioner though, so I'll definitely order your mask.

Bluntness100 · 31/05/2021 17:58

Fingers crossed! I dyed mine this morning as it had went proper coppery again,

cannaethink · 31/05/2021 18:21

I bought this last week, it’s great! It only lasted til I washed it again though. The Charles Worthington blue shampoo did nothing for me.
I didn’t use gloves but found the green came off my hands pretty easily with a flannel and soap. I kept it away from my parting to avoid green scalp just in case but actually none of my scalp or face had any green tinge.

Yellowtulips33 · 31/05/2021 18:33

@Bluntness100 yep, so sick of having to dye it every few weeks just to get rid of the orange.
@cannaethink it’s fab isn’t it. Lasted 4 or 5 washes for me

This is very helpful information! I’ll be giving it a go, thanks Smile

cannaethink · 01/06/2021 13:47

@Yellowtulips33 I decided to leave it on longer last night to see if it would last more than one wash... I’d been leaving it about 3 minutes, so went for 6. Bad idea! Haha! Had a definite green tinge to the lighter bits of hair Grin I gave it another shampoo though and it was fine, but just a word of warning if anyone has slightly lighter bits! Doesn’t greenify my greys though...

Yellowtulips33 · 01/06/2021 14:54

Oh bugger 😬. Sorry about that. I always leave it on for at least 10 mins and didn’t happen to me. Glad it came out after a wash

Matrix products are great. I'm naturally dark brown and have my hair dyed quite a bright red. It used to fade to orange until I found Matrix Color obsessed shampoo and conditioner. It was still bright red when hairdressers reopened(6 months!) Awful grey roots thoughGrin

MrsKoala · 01/06/2021 19:41

Oh brilliant. Thanks, I will order some. It makes sense, when I was studying hair and makeup many many years ago I was told that brown dyes are made up of red pigment and green pigment (home dyes have more red which is why I stopped using them) and that green fades quicker than red, so just leaves the red pigment on the hair. That's why whenever you dye your hair brown you end up going red.

UhtredRagnarson · 01/06/2021 19:43

OMG thank you thank you thank you!! OP! Bane of my life. I’m ordering immediately! Will report back! Thank you

Yellowtulips33 · 01/06/2021 20:30

Yep, turns out it was green toner we needed all along, not blue or purple, which every hairdresser I have ever spoken to has insisted is the case. (Also really hoping it works for everyone else, and doesn’t give you all Grotbags hair 😂)

MrsKoala · 01/06/2021 20:37

Can I ask is your hair dyed brown all over? I have ombre/balayage hair and I have the roots dyed brown (my natural colour to blend the grey in) and the bottom half bleached to give the ombre/balayage effect. I'm worried the blonde will go green.

Yellowtulips33 · 01/06/2021 20:48

@MrsKoala Hmm, yeah, mine's brown all over. I fear your bleached bits might indeed go green, sorry. Although on the Amazon reviews there's a picture of a woman with quite light hair and it seems to have worked ok for her? Eeek, not sure.

Op just wanted to say a huge thanks, that stuffs brilliant. You’re right, Used it today, only for five mins as worried it would turn my hair a funny colour, but the remaining coppery hue went totally. Will be using it weekly. Thanks again ⭐️⭐️⭐️

UhtredRagnarson · 05/06/2021 14:22

Impatiently waiting for my mask to arrive!!

Plum525 · 05/06/2021 21:49

Used today! Left in for about 3 minutes and worked well...going to be brave and leave on for longer next time!
Didn’t use gloves but came off easily enough with a loofa and soap. Also avoided my parting to not have alien scalp

Yellowtulips33 · 07/06/2021 10:01

@Bluntness100 @Plum525

It's so great isn't it?. So glad to have finally found something that works!
