Go to a Stila counter and buy their lovely two ended eyelining brush and some of their black eyeshadow and get the girl to show you how to use it with water. I bought this in New York nine years ago and have done it every day since, absolutely brilliant for a day time eyelined look.

theres a really good forum for make up where you can get advice from prof makeup artists. www.makeupadvicemessageboard.co.uk.
They also have a face of the day bit where you can see others peoples ideas, its a very good site, just for all things makeup/beauty. hope its ok to post it on here as I found it by recommendation.

Sparkletastic · 15/11/2007 12:21

sammysam - your look sounds pretty good for daytime but maybe try a green shadow or glittery green liquid eyeliner for evening. Urban Decay good for funky glitter stuff. Or how about a smoky grey on eyelids with beige above - secret is blend, blend and then blend again!! The Too Faced Mini Chronicles sets are good as all bits that go together - gloss, blush and shadows. Also good VFM. www.discountcosmetics.com is a great site for bargain make up if you fancy mucking about with some new colours (apologies but can't do links...).

sammysam · 15/11/2007 14:40

Thanks littleboo that sounds great-can't get it to work though-none of it works

Sparkletastic-i've tried green but can't seem to get the shade right, nor do i know what to do apart from all over colour-prb why i always look like i've been punched!
when you say blend-how and what with?

There's a Stila counter in Liberty's. And in Selfridges. And maybe in some big Boots (not totally sure).

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 18:08

I have the same weirdy eyes and also tend towards the punched look, and have a fabulous Stila palette my sis bought me of gold-ish, khaki and brown eyeshadows - this kind of thing (but I suspect a lot more expensive)

for evenings I do gold all over the lid, then khaki over the outside half (blend blend blend), then brown in the outside corner (blend ditto)
sparkly green is a bit beyond me

best thing is to go to a counter and get them to show you how to do it - Mac are good, so is Bobbi Brown if you can't get to a Stila.

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 18:17

now this even has a sound chip to talk you through it - maybe buy similar shades from somewhere cheap like Superdrug and follow the instructions?

sammysam · 16/11/2007 14:47

That
sou nds good MrsBadger-think gold is the only way to go really as silver looks very odd next to my eyes.

I'm very but when you say blend-how and what with?

Never been brave enough to go to a counter-always a) worried they'll think i'm stupid and b)worried i'll come away looking stupid and very 'made up' which isn't me

plus would you go with or without any make up?

really should go-might drag my sister with me

Stila looks great but i'm nowhere near a Liberty's or Selfridges-can you order on line?

Personally I blend by smearing it around with my fingers.

go to counter with no makeup on and say Natural Look
they love it, more fun than just selling stuff

LaCerbiatta · 16/11/2007 15:08

I'm like you... can never apply any eye shadow without looking like I've been punched. The equivalent of a smoky eye for me is using a brown pencil close to my top lashes and then blending with a cotton bud upwards (I find these are very useful for blending!). I also like pale pink eye shadow, I think it's flattering for my (our) eye colour.

here are good tips on applying make up.

dairylea4brains · 16/11/2007 15:09

okay...this is the best product i have ver used. Not only can you have a light natural look but it comes with instructions how to vamp it up. Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes palette. I got mine in Debenhams. Boots also stock Benefit.

Its fantastic. The quickest and easiest way to brighten up an old look is to use blue mascara (dont laugh!)

Also try a white eye pencil on the lower inner rims of your eyes and a smidge of highlighter on the inner corners.

dairylea4brains · 16/11/2007 15:12

oops just read your message again...if you want sprkly eyes then try Borjois sparkle eye pencils. They are easier to apply than the liquid ones if you are not used to them.

They come in black, brown, green, blue and grey. Subtle but dazzly!

For full on sparkle try Hard Candy or Urban Decay.

If you go to a counter they will often do a demo for free.

sammysam · 17/11/2007 18:14

great tips-thanks!
I'm going to make a trip into town in the week-only choice will be boots and debenhams so will have to go with whatever they have for now-but it'll be a start

MrsBadger · 20/11/2007 16:48

oh oh oh
that superdrug palette I linked to
here she is actually using it

StrangeTown · 20/11/2007 16:54

Really - give the counters a try. I do it loads on Friday night when I am going out and get them to do eyes - they are tricky. Doesn't matter if you have make up on or not, they will take it off.

Stila's Convertible Colour are the best ( I think that's the one Anna means - a neutral shimmery all over shade at one end, then a soft liner and smudger, it does make things easier. I have brown eyes and use the moss green one.

mrs badger, that youtube clip is fascinating, she's a revelation!
