Shirt or dress over black leggings - how to style?

And can it ever look good?! I have compression leggings that really help with circulation problems in my legs but they are not pretty! Can you help me style it? I'm 175cm, size 10. Only natural fibres as the leggings already make me hot!

What do you mean - like base layer leggings, do they look like gym leggings?

lonel · 05/05/2021 15:18

Yes. Just plain black non- shiney leggings.

Organic bamboo leggings are cooler
Look at BAM - ethical
I find them comfortable

Happyhome21 · 05/05/2021 19:19

You want the plain leggings not the performance ones which I find too tight

Happyhome21 · 05/05/2021 19:20

I would ring and ask them as the thicker ones would be too hot

Happyhome21 · 05/05/2021 19:23

Longer maxi or midx dresses would cover the leggings
M and S have lots of cotton and viscose longer length dresses

lonel · 05/05/2021 20:29

Thanks but I already have the leggings! They are like support stockings. I just can't think how to make them look nicer so was looking for ideas of what would look good over the top. I could wear maxi dresses but I was hoping for something that I could wear to work too.

I wear plain black leggings all the time with short-ish tunic style or jumper dresses and boots, or Converse-style trainers if I'm feeling brave. I'm about the same dimensions as you, if that's relevant.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 05/05/2021 21:21

It's my daily uniform , but I'll be honest, not really stylish.

Also the look is much better when it's cold and you can add boots to it. With flats it just kinda looks like you got cut off.

I normally wear them with tunic or t-shirt dresses . Or I do a layered (probably massively outdated) looks. Long vest with some kind of (mostly loose) jumper/top on top.

I'm happy enough with it and it is a comfortable and appropriate look for work, but no one would call me stylish.Grin

Some that aren't too bad.

Wear a vest style body suit, leggings and a over sized white shirt over it. Thin double belt to nip it in the waist and some clumpy boots?

I feel like I'd like this style but I'm not renowned for being trending Grin

I do think it’s all about the ankle. That cut-off isn’t flattering but if you can hide it, anything arse-covering works

bjjgirl · 06/05/2021 06:03

I came on to say cropped jumpers but for work I'd struggle

lonel · 06/05/2021 06:17

Thanks!

I think the main thing to think about is shoes – ballet flats with leggings are really dated, what I wore in the 2000s as a teenager. Depends how casually you can dress at work but they look more up to date with trainers/converse/boots

murmurlade · 06/05/2021 06:21

And yes echo a PP who said length important! Right down to the ankle if yours are that long, no 3/4 or 7/8 look. Do you remember 'pedal pushers'! 😄

Rina66 · 06/05/2021 06:25

I think I'd get some black flats that you really love that work well with the leggings, I always start with shoes! Then, what about something like this?

https://manamou.co.uk/collections/new-in/products/athena-dress-black

It can be worn as a bottom covering top with your leggings, 100% cotton, sleeves and a flattering v neck, so perfect for work? Comes in lots of other colours, but the dusty pink colour which would be great with your black leggings or maybe stone or khaki?

Or a safari shirt? With black vest underneath and leopard print shoes? https://manamou.co.uk/products/safari-shirt-beige?pos=2&&sid=d4f04fd0c&ss=r

Or a tunic? With black sandals if it's hot, black pumps if it's cooler or black ankle boots so the leggings are like opaque tights? https://manamou.co.uk/products/positano-dress-cream?pos=4&&sid=9c8dbd8ab&ss=r

Loving the denim shirt suggestion too.

I don't know, given that pedal pushers were very in in about 1998 then I reckon they'll come back big time this summer.

WaltzingBetty · 06/05/2021 06:37

I'd style with ankle boots, hi-tops or sandals in summer

Long length leggings as others have said, and a belt to add shape

midnightstar66 · 06/05/2021 07:10

My work uniform is black leggings and tunic/jumper dresses that come just below the bum (too short to be worn without leggings) or with a longline vest and a normal length sweatshirt. Although comfort while looking semi smart is my main priority, It can look pretty trendy with a nice pair of chunky boots. The likes of boohoo and ASOS are teaming with these items so can't be that uncool

For teenagers, yes! Not for working age people, that would look tragic!
