Where can I find good quality, petite maxi dresses?

I'm middle aged and I've put on a stone over lockdown, which I will lose fairly quickly now I'm out and about again.

I'm 5ft, currently size 10.

I'm looking for something good quality but not designer, I have the budget for a few dresses.

Looking for non-workwear, maybe 1 evening dress but we don't go out much! It's daytime dresses I'm looking for really.

As for style; I don't like this colour or the pattern but I like this style Whistles dress. I would prefer sleeves, long or short.

I'm an hourglass shape so wrap dresses or anything that drops from the bust or nips in at the waist suits me.

Although it doesn't have sleeves and it's not a maxi dress, I bought this last year and it suits me All Saints dress.

I’ve just ordered this dress www.baumundpferdgarten.com/uk/jocelina21452c6220.html an excitedly awaiting its arrival. I saw it on a YouTuber who is my height (5ft) and it looks like it’ll be ankle length

Southernc0mfortmirror · 02/05/2021 10:12

New Look also have some great midi and maxi dresses at the moment www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/c/uk-womens-clothing-dresses-midi-dresses

I'm 5'3 and often wear normal size midi dresses as maxi's. Ghost have some gorgeous ones that work well.

BlackSwan · 02/05/2021 10:27

If you could find a good tailor to alter things (not the person who puts up hems at the drycleaners) it opens up so many possibilities.
I often buy beautiful things on sale which need taking in/up, then take them to the tailor for alteration. Can get expensive if you're entirely re-working a piece, but otherwise can be value for money.

Same. I look for midi dresses that I can wear as a maxi but finding that this season a lot of the midis and longer than usual so need to be selective.

Thank you everyone 😊

@Southernc0mfortmirror thank you! I really like that dress and I'm sure you'll look gorgeous in it.
I love the colour, the pattern and the style. For me though it's round necked and I'm busty so round necks often don't suit me so well. It looks like the back is sheer too? Will you wear a bra? I suspect that for me it would be a nearly right dress, although I usually buy good quality clothes they have to be right if that makes sense?

The New Look ones are ok though they look quite huge, do you own any of them? Long dresses are ok on me but anything voluminous makes me look like I'm pregnant

@VorpalSword do you have either of those Boden dresses? I really like the shape of the Veronica, my only question is that it makes the model look larger than she is. So I'm wondering what it looks like on a real person? Oh and they have sold out in petite sizes . Bum
They've sold out of the Poppy dress too

Thanks @Jellybott, I love Ghost clothes so I'll take a look and give them a go.

Well, I used a lovely tailor @BlackSwan but she's pregnant, it's a hard-won pregnancy so she's shielding and good, reasonably priced tailors are hard to come by.

@karmakameleon I try midi dresses. Sometimes it works, other times they are neither midi nor maxi, they hit my shins at the wrong spot.

Thank you all, please keep suggesting, this is really helpful.

The Boden Poppy in plain navy would have been perfect and I love the Baumundpfergarten one. It would be good to know what it looks like on.

I feel your pain - some years ago it appeared to be decided that all maxidresses should scrape along the floor when worn by a nearly 6ft model! And a lot of petite places don't do anything longer than mid calf, it's really annoying.

My best maxi dress is from M&S kids and I've had it for nearly 10 years now!

80sEyeShadow · 02/05/2021 13:36

Actually M&S kids is not a bad idea.

@Echobelly I saw them! A lifetime ago, which tells you what an oldie I am Confused

Gap have stopped doing petites in the UK, Monsoon seem to have stopped, Anthropologie & Free People don't sell petite in the UK, even though they do it abroad. Hmm

A petite maxi dress really is a fashion unicorn, isn't it?

I recently bought two Next petite midi dresses and they’re lovely. Not sure about maxi dresses though.
I’m not usually a next fan- so pleasantly surprised!

FedNlanders · 02/05/2021 14:36

I usually get my petite ones at Tu

SwimBaby · 02/05/2021 14:41

I’m five feet one and wear H&M and Next midi dresses, they aren’t quite maxi on me but do look good.

PineappleCakes · 02/05/2021 14:44

Have you looked at &Other Stories? www.stories.com/en_gbp/clothing/dresses.html

I'm 5ft 2" and most midi dresses are maxi length on me, and that's fine for me. The problem is finding a petite midi dress Hmm

80sEyeShadow · 02/05/2021 23:58

I've found loads of petite midi dresses @PineappleCakes, just no maxi dresses.

As I have said in PP full sized midi dresses just don't suit me, they are the wrong length.

It's probably worth saying that my search for a maxi dress has been going on for a few years now!
