How can Elle cost £5.99?

£5.99 for this month’s Elle magazine! How? They can’t be expecting to sell many copies for that price, surely?

I haven’t bought Elle in years. I sometimes buy Vogue when it is on special offer for £3. I must be out of touch with the terrifying cost of fashion magazines.

They are full of adverts and ‘partnership content’ (ie sponsored by advertisers) anyway. Actually I can’t say for sure with this month’s Elle because it was sealed in a plastic bag with a tiny tube of Elemis moisturiser allegedly worth £15 or something.

Does anyone think that £5.99 is worth it?

I actually get magazines through my library digitally for free which I really enjoy. I use it for BBC good food magazine and a few fashion ones. If you like magazines and don't want to pay it's pretty good, I use it on my tablet.

The real problem is instagram/blogging and that no-one is prepared to pay for quality high fashion articles and print (and the bigwigs of the publishing world know it). Same as quality fashion itself, a dying breed.

Yes I agree, and it's not only in fashion - I'm always seeing people moaning on Twitter that they can't read an article because its paywalled. We seem to have lost touch with the idea that journalists have to earn a living just like the rest of us and that good writing is something to cherish.

I think people (me) feel they are paying enough for internet service and don't want to have to pay extra to read specific articles.

I understand needing to save money, but wonder if it means the journalists and photographers in the industry will suffer.

That's the reason good quality journalism is in decline by so many wanting to read content for free.

Well when a magazine costs as much as a book I'm not going to buy one.
