How does everyone have such white teeth these days?

In the past I've had my teeth professionally whitened by a very expensive dentist with those trays and goo you get, but even then I don't think they were really noticeably white. How does everyone do it? I know people always say 'Crest White Strips' but in this country they still cost an absolute fortune, is everyone secretly using white strips every day like (I am led to believe by American TV shows) Americans do?

I know for a fact these people are tea and coffee drinkers, in some case also smokers, and I'm pretty sure my own tea/coffee habit is average for a British adult, possibly less (about 3 cups a day). My dental hygiene is excellent.

How do they do it?

Your teeth may not have enough enamel to cope with the sanding in the prep work so he’s probably right that a porcelain veneer isn’t an option for you as it would fall off after a while & getting a crown means filing away a lot of the tooth which would be excessive in your case. But he either sounds like he’s not up to date on the latest advances or else he doesn’t want you to go elsewhere & lose your business. Composite bonding would be a good alternative for you which he might not have heard of & obviously hasn’t had the extra training in. There’s quite an art to it. I’ve had my front 2 teeth done as the enamel was thin & the dentine was starting to look yellow & the edges of my teeth were worn from grinding teeth at night. The bonding has fixed both problems & I’m very happy with the result now.
