waves hello

Thank you for the new thread! I have nothing to contribute, sadly. But I'd still like to follow along. :)

banivani · 22/03/2021 15:58

That makes perfect sense culturally - reason I asked was that I had an inkling kimonos have a second hand market (an inkling I should fact check before typing) so wondered if similar in other places (again, not even sure it is true for japan but too distracted to fact check atm)

botemp · 22/03/2021 16:05

Yes, kimonos are cheap as chips in Japan, you can get them for pennies at a flea market or for a bit more (like €20) in tourist shops (more like independent interesting tourist shops that cater to Western tastes as opposed to a proper souvenir shop) but it's mostly kimonos worn by restaurant staff or rental bridal ones. I think culturally there's also a difference in that they're hoarders unlikely to get rid of things unless they have to, so bankruptcy, death, divorce, etc. Hence the high association with bad energy and misfortune that you don't want to inherit. I never really saw traditional Chinese dress being sold in China, maybe I didn't look well enough but I suspect the cultural revolution had something to do with it (plenty of leftovers and trinkets from that to be found though).

any closer to a new home yet?

OP posts:
CatherineMaitland · 22/03/2021 17:06

Trying to buy house no. 4, no-one's replied to any communication for about a month so who knows...Haha

I noticed John Lewis are going to stock Baukjen and Community Clothing among other small brands - might make trying some of their stuff easier.

Hi all! I've been lurking for a bit and you all seem very knowledgable. Maybe you could help me out with advice? I love these trousers: News Edit from Stockhom brand Hope. hope-sthlm.com/se/en/p/news-edit-trousers-black-essentials/00249823-black
I once bought them in London and I wore them until they have become threadbare. I am actually wearing them now but they are only good for home use.
Any advice how and where I can get them given Brexit? Or anything that is very similar? I am also tall, and trousers usually run short but all things Scandinavian fits me well. Massive thanks

botemp · 22/03/2021 20:41

Hi there Life, it looks like Zalando carry them which is hassle free post Brexit as things are delivered duties paid. Boozt and their outlet Booztlet (where they're half price) carry them but I don't know if they deliver duties paid as I can only see my local version of that site (which is in the EU) so you'll have to check that yourself. Yoox carries the brand and has lots of trousers but they don't mention model names, so not sure if they have that specific model but they will in all likelihood deliver duties paid too like Zalando, fairly certain anyhow, but don't take my word for it and check the FAQ on the UK site.

That's annoying Catherine, don't people want to sell their house when it's on the market Confused

Catherine, you're really having the worst luck!

Floisme · 23/03/2021 13:47

istherelife I like the shape of those trousers, especially in the 2nd and 3rd pics. I don't know of an exact dupe but I've been looking at these Plumo ones although they're wider in the leg and also largely polyester (which I don't mind so much in trousers but I know some disagree). I've not seen them in real life.

Or the chinos from the last +J collection - might have a bit of a similar vibe? No dropped crotch but the curved shape means they're narrow in the leg but slouchy on the thigh without giving me the 'parsnip' look that I often get with tapered trousers, and also without any added bulk from pleating. Plus they're half price now. (I've just sent for a second pair.)

I find Toast are often good for low crotch slouchy trousers but I can't get on the website at the moment.

Catherine you poor thing Flowers

banivani · 23/03/2021 14:30

I bought the coat ... and a knitted blazer from Boomerang. Pics only of coat.

Nice herringbone bani... looking forward to seeing it upcycled. And the blazer.

quirkychick · 23/03/2021 16:58

Nice coat, bani. I love the Pinterest board too, now I've found it. Blush

Interesting you saying that about secondhand and Chinese/Asian culture. I read a recent article about a journalist (not sure from which Asian culture) who felt terrible guilt about vintage items, as her family felt it was a real slight that they couldn't provide for her.

flo, I have been eyeing up those Plumo trousers too. I think they've had them for several seasons.

quirkychick · 23/03/2021 16:59

That second paragraph was in reply to bo.

botemp · 23/03/2021 18:16

Lovely coat Bani, now just a competent tailor to find Wink

Yeah, quirky, it's interesting how things can be embedded like that, I generally feel quite far removed from Asian culture but it's seeped in in many corners regardless. I think the status aspect of it and embarrassment of things not being new is a more general issue across cultures, when buying things secondhand was never a choice but the only option feelings and memories around it are a very different thing.

@Floisme Thank you; I like the look of Plumo trousers
@botemp thank you for the tips!

botemp · 24/03/2021 08:01

Bani, I have pics for your Pinterest board, I was reading about Elsa Peretti as she recently passed and she was one great dresser (and Tiffany's jewellery designer). Although I think in pic 3 she's actually the one standing.

Good friend to Halston (so sad he died young, he made amazing clothes) and I desperately want that dress now...

Oh the order is messed up Hmm so pic 1 then.

banivani · 24/03/2021 08:34

Oooo very good. I'm looking for photos now.

My criteria are

  • no men in the photo (I could crop, but am not THAT invested yet)
  • I prefer a casual shot, not glamour shots/magazine shots/sex appeal shots
  • Even if they are working/creating/active (writing, painting, knitting whatever) it should feel as though they in the moment are inside themselves somehow so the "repose/resting" aspect comes through - mindfulness maybe

I then promptly break all the rules, esp the glamour shot one. But generally I seem to be looking more at women than the clothes for this one I've noticed, I need perhaps to rein it in!

Speaking of that, my husband was looking at it and we had a discussion about coolness. He's a Georgia O'Keefe fan (or perhaps rather of the photos of her, he's a photography buff) and we agreed that she was sooooo cool. He posits that the coolness of women of the 20s/30s has never been repeated. That the 50s killed it off, and that no-one now is really cool. Discuss.

I found a youtube video showing how to alter a blazer/coat yourself, but I can honestly say I highly doubt I could be arsed. So I have to look for a tailor. Every source on the internet says it's sO hArd but yer wan in the video just cracked on with it -- nevertheless I suspect I might be asked to pay a premium for this. Ideally about 4 cm should be taken out of each shoulder ...

botemp · 24/03/2021 08:46

Hmm, it may be a socio economic thing post WWI, there were more women than marriable men, and the men that did come back were fairly traumatised. Women who were independently wealthy were able to shape their lives a fair bit more than any generation before them and generally the older generations were consumed with grief that life would never be what it was before. Let us not forgot that much of the suffragette movement was very tied into financial independence, the cool girls were the ones with money and the leading example. If you want to reduce it crudely women fought for the right to be able to buy dresses at Selfridges, most activist movements only really gain momentum when there's a capitalist incentive.

OP posts:
Floisme · 24/03/2021 08:47

It's a splendid coat bani well played. Do you have a neighbourhood with a few second hand clothes shops? If so then I'd hang around there and ask about tailors - well that's how I found mine.

isthere if you do send for those Plumo trousers please report back for me and quirky!

We're only two pages in and I'm falling behind already. A Cos reselling site did you say? And I'm pleased for Community Clothing getting the John Lewis gig. Smart move for JL too - they'll have lost quite a few concession brands and some new faces will hopefully help get people back through the doors.

banivani · 24/03/2021 08:49

Hm maybe, a certain freedom from the expectations of getting married (no men around) and freedom to pursue your own thing (less energy on behalf of the patriarchy to keep women in their place). And then the money to go with that. I keep coming back to the quote in Busman's Honeymoon about how now it's men who have to do the grooming and women are free (paraphrased).

botemp · 24/03/2021 08:54

I've not read Busman's Honeymoon but out of context and taking in consideration the era I'm completely reading that as men pursuing men (by grooming as a signal) makes women free...

OP posts:
botemp · 24/03/2021 08:56

Thinking of cool women from that era, ofave you added any Peggy Guggenheim to your Pinterest board, I'm sure she's reclining somewhere...

OP posts:
banivani · 24/03/2021 08:56

Haha no, Harriet Vane is lying in bed listening to Lord Peter shaving and thinking how great it is to be a modern woman and have such ease of dressing and grooming. Zero gayness.
