Why does my hair ONLY look glossy and frizz-free after a cheap home dye job?

I've tried all sorts of expensive conditioners, treatments and styling products. But the only time I really like my (long, wavy, frizz-prone) hair is after using the cheap Schwarzkopf box of dye that I've been using every 6 weeks or so during lockdown. I thought maybe it was the sachet of conditioner that came with the dye so bought a Schwarzkopf colour protect conditioner - no good. What's in the dye that's making my hair look healthy? What can I use in between that will have the same effect?

The dye molecules are padding your hair out making it feel great. It’s not really though, every chemical process causes some damage to the hair.

Also, the conditioner with the dye won’t be quite like the ones on the shop shelf. The ones in the dye are laden with even more silicones to make you think the dye made your hair amazing and that you should buy it again.

I tried going silicone free, curly girl method etc. Didn't help either.

I use Aveeno shampoo/conditioner OP. It was a game changer for me, its so good I use as little as I can so it lasts longer.

I buy it when its on offer too to save money.

I have very fine fizzy hair, I use L'oreal semi permanent colours, which are fine, and Aveeno shampoo/conditioner leaves my frizzy hair smooth and silky.

Ive tried countless brands over the years, but Aveeno is delicious 🌺

Wisnaeme which Aveeno products do you use? I've tried the brand before but am always open to having another go

Try washing your hair with bar soap - proper soap, not a foaming bar...it really works. I have done the curly girl thing - it didn't work - I use a combo of ideas from Manesbymel on Youtube and soap! My hair has never looked better and the effect lasts more than one day!

nofrizzplease which soap do you use?

I mostly use Little Soap Company Eco Warrior Nourishing Shampoo Bar
but I have used others, including soap I made myself (with the same effect). Just make sure it isn't based on sodium laurel sulphates aka detergents - the fewer ingredients the better. I don't understand why it works - but it leaves my hair with lovely shiny curls...I also use Aveda Thickening Tonic and Boucleme Natural Curl Defining Gel but when I use shampoo - whatever shampoo (including no shampoo) with these products I still get halo frizz, so the only thing that works is soap!

If you try it and it works - can you come back and let me know, I'm curious if it's just me that it works for.

Will do!
