If you are a 5"7 apple, what trouser shape do you wear?

I am completely confused by all the shapes out there. Wide-leg, skinnies, barrel, straight leg, anklegrazers....

I am 5'7, size 10-12, long legs, and carrying all my weight on my tummy. If you are the same, what shape of trouser do you find most flattering? I don't really care what is in style. If I were to worry about that, I would be wearing mom jeans, which look horrible on me.

Not skinnies if you are carrying your weight around your stomach.

I am a similar shape and tend to go for straight legs.

Frequentflier · 14/02/2021 17:27

Ah, thanks. I do have a lot of straight legs including my latest pair of jeans. But was wondering if wide legs are the way to go.

Not wide legs. You just end up looking like a tree trunk.

I tend to go for ankle grazers or 7/8 length. I find them more feminine when you're an apple. And look neat with either trainers or heels.

I veer between skinnies (asos Ridley) for more dressed up - haven't worn them in a while, lol - and Levi 501s for comfort.

What they have in common is being high waisted and show a bit of ankle bone.

Realistically what I've worn 5 days out of 7 the last year are the black Jersey tapered trousers from M&S. Elastic waist, and basically pyjamas, but flattering enough to wear in public.

Lots of style blogs suggesting widelegs! Ankle grazers make me feel cold in this weather but will consider for summer.

I'm also 5'7 and sound a similar shape and size to you. I find wide legs are very unflattering on me as they hide my legs, which are my slimmest part, and just make me look wide all the way down. Skinnies or straight leg seem to work best, and avoiding short tops which stop at my widest part. Slim cut 7/8 work well in Spring/Summer but I don't like them in winter.

lavenderlou · 16/02/2021 11:51

Wide legs look best on people with a small waist, IMO.

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 16/02/2021 14:52

Apple shape here. I think all trouser shapes work as long as there is no extra volume around the waist and they have some stretch in them. The key for me is to have at least a hip length top and trousers that have no fastenings where possible.

These are my staples-

Cropped Capri trousers- slim fitting - worn with longline/tunics
Cropped leggings/jeggings worn with tunics
Wide leg pull on jersey trousers- worn with hip length slash neck tops
Flare/bootcuts - Next - lift slim and shape- high waisted so they haul it all in.
Full length jeggings - New Look smile ones are great and look like jeans. Next Scult also good.
White Company double jersey pull on trousers are excellent too.

5'7" size 20 apple here. Straight leg all the way! M&S straight leg work trousers are my go to for smart. M&S straight cut, high waist jeans with a bit of stretch for casual.

grownup2 · 16/02/2021 16:29

You described me.
Richmond trousers from Boden work for me if I have to be smart - great quality cotton with stretch and a slim cut - various lengths.
Otherwise, for casual, M&S high waist jeggings in many many colours. I wear them ankle grazing length with hip length or longer tops. They are very forgiving at the waist and wash and wear brilliantly.
Interested in others' suggestions.

Think I have inadvertently drifted towards the right thing to wear, maybe. Have removed all tops that end at the waist from my wardrobe and only wear long line tops. Also have long suspected that, as unfashionable as bootlegs may be, they look good on me because I have a small bum and slim legs. I love the M and S jeggings too! Will check out some of the other suggestions too. Thanks everyone.

High waist skinny jeans. The high waist keeps everything tucked in and flattened. Skinny jeans show off relatively slender and long legs (relative to tum!).

Is that what's called mum jeans?

I will never wear wide legged jeans - makes me feel like it's 2001 again. I'm not sure who they are supposed to flatter, and I'm not interested in finding out Grin

bourbonne · 16/02/2021 17:47

Re: top length, it can be nice to have jackets etc that end dead on the waist, worn open - they can accentuate the waistline (and make your legs look longer) without actually clinging to it.

thecatisaliveandwell · 16/02/2021 19:37

A 5'5" apple checking in.....

I wear:

Denim dungarees

Gap Skinny Maternity Demi Panel Jeans (too old to be pregnant, but they are so comfy; I buy one size up so that they sit higher on the waist and look more like straight leg on me)

M&S Cosy Jeggings £19.50. These are very warm and soft to wear. Look fab with longer tops.

I'd avoid anything with pleats on the waist. They will do you no favours.

Avoid tapered leg jeans/trousers. They will make your hips look big.

Straight leg jeans....great

Draw attention to your good bits...legs.

And consider maternity jeans or trousers for comfort. If you wear longline tops, no one will know.

Your very own dirty little secret......

madmumofteens · 16/02/2021 20:10

My go to jeans are m&s lift and sculpt they hold you in and it's higher waist and so comfortable

FoxBaseBeta · 16/02/2021 21:47

I'm also in the 5'7" apple shaped size 10 club. I live in M&S slim fit jeans called 'lily'. They're mid rise which I find most flattering around my apple belly (with added c section overhang 😒) . I find all the high rise jeans really emphasise my belly...
They're slim fit but skinny enough to tuck into my docs.

Mom (mum) jeans aren't skinny....they are fairly wide in the thigh and tapered, they are also high waisted.

Not the best choice for an apple shape

bourbonne · 17/02/2021 14:33

Ah right. Well, this mum likes her jeans skinny!

YouCantCallMeBetty · 17/02/2021 20:43

This thread is great, I'm the same size/shape and have been thinking about trying some straight legs for a while. I also have a wardrobe full of M&S jeggings.
I have also during lockdown bought a couple of pairs of mom jeans and have been wearing them at home with tops or thin jumpers...tucked in!
I have always stayed away from tucking things in because of my tummy but have found it strangely liberating to do so and it's actually pretty comfy (I bought bigger mom jeans to accommodate the tum and I like the high waist)
I just don't look at myself side on in the mirror and everything's good Grin

These are mom jeans, for those confused. www.marksandspencer.com/l/women/jeans/fs5/mom-fit

I used to wear these jeans as a teenager when I had washboard abs, but I don't think they are flattering on me now.
