Beauty purchases that were pointless, but you feel obliged to use up...

I'll start with mine. Clarins energy drops. I have had a bottle of this for what seems like many years (certainly about 3, I suspect). Because it's used 1 drop at a time, when I remember, it feel like the Magic Porridge Pot. I feel obliged to use it, without actually feeling like it/they make much difference to me. I think they may have discontinued it now, or at least, I remember a while ago at a Clarins counter, I was offered a very generous discount, rather implying other folks couldn't see the point/benefit either. So, indulge me in my lockdown madness musings, and tell me what you thought, or even share your Porridge Pot Purchases! Grin

this illuminating moisturiser it does absolutely nothing for me - neither moisturises nor illuminates. I can’t even remember buying it. But I feel obliged to use it up as it is so pricey and I hate to waste.

WellTidy · 10/02/2021 17:41

Also - body creams and lotions. I have enough to last me until about 2025, and that assumes I will moisturise my entire body every two to three days (which I won’t). I just can’t get through them. Any of them! From Clarins down to Garnier.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/02/2021 17:43

Oh gosh. That was quite spendy. If it makes you feel better, I once bought some Creme de la mere face cream, when my brain packed up and left home. It made absolutely no difference to me, and I gave it away to my Aunt.

oh @welltidy I love that moisturiser, I got it in my 2019 advent calendar and bought it again! Didn't pay £90 tho.

TinyCake · 10/02/2021 18:08

Natasha Denona multichrome liquid eyeshadow l it's stunning but best suited for a night out..

TinyCake · 10/02/2021 18:09

Forgot to say so now I'm using it everyday just to get through it. I feel way OTT when i open the door to the postman

Grimble69 · 10/02/2021 18:17

Bare Minerals powder foundation I bought as a 'bargain' from QVC along with a mascara and eye shadow.
The foundation is dreadful, it's too light for me I think plus it sort of sits on my skin. I've tried using it under foundation or as an eye shadow base but there's loads left still.
I should've returned the bloomin stuff but I didn't for whatever reason.

WellTidy · 10/02/2021 18:37

clary- now you’ve said it, I think I got in in the Liberty advent calendar 2018. So I didn’t buy it properly. Thankfully! Glad you like it though.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/02/2021 18:39

Ah, that's interesting about the Bare Minerals. I was eying up a kind of JML version in Boots the other day, a colour correcting one, and wondering if it was too good to be true. Glad it's not just me that has this stuff.

I bought some caffeine drops that were supposed to magically get rid of my dark circles and wrinkly eyes. They do absolutely nothing but I think if I stop then I'll miss the golden window that they did work.

Grimble69 · 10/02/2021 18:49

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants
I've used the JML one from Boots and it was better than the BM one I bought. The BM was pricey and I feel obliged to use it up somehow. I've never had such a poor colour match before.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/02/2021 19:19

That's interesting @Grimble69. Thanks.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/02/2021 19:20

Grimble, is the JML one a loose powder too? Looks like it is, but not sure.

Currently using this Verso serum which as far as I can tell does absolutely nothing, but I’m persevering anyway. I did get it as part of a set, so didn’t pay full RRP!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/02/2021 19:21

Caffeine drops. I tried caffeine on my thighs, meant to be good for cellulite, and it didn't make much difference!

I have a Dermalogica vitamin enriched face mask which I bought after I had been treated to a birthday facial .I cannot resist any sort of sales patter . It cost ££ rather than £££ but has done absolutely nothing for my skin.

kidscreatemess · 10/02/2021 19:25

I have caffeine drops too but by the time I've finished with my serum, exfoliant, spf and moisturiser, it feels too much and I'm worried my face will slide off with the weight of product.

Grimble69 · 10/02/2021 19:52

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants
No the JML one I used was a solid powder. Perhaps they do a loose one as well?
The BM was one of the most expensive foundations I've bought but is the worst by far.

I love that dermalogica mask, is it the orangey coloured one?
Timeandtune · 10/02/2021 23:27

Yes . That’s the one. Has lasted for ages. Nothing wrong with it but it has no effect whatsoever on my skin

hollieberrie · 10/02/2021 23:38

Bleach London Smoky Shampoo. The packaging is kind of cool and every time i use it I have dreams of effortless east London hair chic. Then i use it and my hair looks dull and sludgy. I vow never to use it again. About 3 weeks later I catch sight of the cool bottle on my bathroom shelf and the whole cycle starts gain. It genuinely makes my hair colour look horrible but I just cant seem to stop.. Confused

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/02/2021 08:10

Bare Minerals stuff breaks me out terribly, but it's so expensive for the size of the pots I once used it up out of guilt (someone bought me it as a present because they actually do very pale shades properly).

I'm coming to the conclusion that the Glossier haul I just bought will go the same way...it's very meh for the price.

NeedWineNow · 11/02/2021 08:54

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. I've never paid full price for it, only got it in sets, usually as part of a TSV on QVC. I know a lot of people swear by it and it is much heralded in the press, but it does absolutely nothing for me and in fact usually makes my skin feel drier. Shame because it smells lovely! I've usually used it up as body cream.

Also had the same experience with Bare Minerals foundation powder. I ordered a TSV from QVC, tried it and DH took one look and said I looked like I was wearing a particularly cakey mask. It went back.

Fispi · 11/02/2021 09:27

Inkey List Caffiene Eye Cream. Everyone seems to love it but I can't feel/see any difference. At least it wasnt really expensive! I have two Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks that I cant bin because they are so expensive and were gifts...but I dont wear them. One is way too dark for me and the other bleeds and transfers like crazy!

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 11/02/2021 09:31

I pan makeup and skincare/bodycare and with skincare I end up hate panning just to use them up. I have some Clarins face products which are lovely but my skin has now decided to react to anything with scent, so i’m using them as foot creams! Grin
