Black velvet dress for 7 yo?

I’ve seen a lovely black velvet dress I would love to buy DD for Xmas.

How do you all feel about black on younger children? My mum is HORRIFIED Confused but is there some superstition she’s not even voicing?!? DD has had a couple of black tops in the past which have really suited her colouring.

Is a black velvet dress some kind of terrible fashion or social faux pas that I’m just missing?

It has a lovely lustre which is why I think it’s a bit ‘different’ from regular black.

I think that's not an uncommon reaction and a lot of people think that children should be all bright and colourful. Personally, I love a tiny goth.

It's sounds lovely if it suits her I can't see the problem. I often see boys that age in black are girls supposed to all be pastel ballerinas? My DD aged 8 chose a black velvet dress last Christmas with a sparkle that looked like a night sky, understated and beautiful and she still wears it with skinny jeans now she's taller. She has quite a few black or charcoal things that really suit her. Velvet has the advantage of being warmer too for the winter than a lot of dress fabric.

No can’t see the issue, maybe post a link to it if you wanted to, black doesn’t equal goth!

Thanks everyone!

It’s this one. It comes in teal but black would suit her much better.

I got dd who was 7 last Christmas a black velvet dress from M&S, so there might be some knocking around on eBay.

Yes, some people are funny about black on kids, no good reason. I had my 'black' phase age 8-9 and remember my grandad complaining about me not wearing colours! Funnily enough I have never worn all black since then.

I love it although dd 7 has a bit of a punk style and loves a leather jacket and doc martens. I even lined it as babies. Not all little girls want to be in baby pink

Thanks everyone! I’ve bought the dress; hope she likes it!

My dd is 3.5 and suits dark colours much better that pastels due to her colouring and chunky build. So glad shes out of the baby ranges now. I've got her a lovely leopard print dress for xmas day. With black tights.

It's a lovely dress IMO, one of my kids looks great in red, she looks very glam. The other one looks great in black, I don't particularly like dressing them in pastel colours, it doesn't suit them.

Nothing wrong with it. Lovely dress. Will look lovely at Christmas time.

I understand your mum's reaction but I remember a black top with diamantes I had as a child and loved, and it looked really nice on.

I love it. I can remember having a black velvet dress as a child, and a red one. Velvet was a thing then!
