New home bits for single dad

Hi,

I know not really style as in clothes style but not sure where to pop this.

I'm looking for inspiration, my lovely brother in law has left his abusive girlfriend finally and has bought himself a lovely little terraced house for him and his son. I'm so proud and happy for them! The house needs some serious work and as a newly single dad money is tight and rightly focused on redecorating and buying necessary furniture.

So as a Christmas and new house present I thought I'd buy him a box of house "stuff" like things women would usually buy to make the house homely that (this very blokey bloke) wouldn't think of, or want to spend money on, but will make his home feel homey and cosy. The ex took all photos, candles, plants trinkets.

So far I have on my list
Pictures of him and his son/family
A print relating to his hobby
A couple of candles
A couple of fake house plants
A cosy throw for sofa

Any other ideas my (postpartum) mind has gone blank! I obviously don't want to fill it with tat or all stuff in my style, but just a few bits and bobs to put on shelves/mantelpiece to help him feel more cosy and like a home that he can add to.

Leaving the ex and their house together, and his step daughters has been so hard on him and he put up with so much pain judicial, emotional and financial abuse before leaving I just want to help make him feel at home in this new place. He's gone from a family of 5 with 4 cats in a 4 bed to just him and his son (50% of the time ) in this small run down terrace that to be fair has great potential and I know it smarts a bit!

Any advice or suggestions welcome!

If he’s got the dogs that makes it more homely.

Wilko functional range is cheap too & lidls always good for plants.

Most of my kitchen stuff is a mix of wilko, John Lewis, le creuset & Poundland. Whenever anyone comments on something it’s always a wilko item.

There's some horribly sexist stuff here about men Hmm

Just because there's no woman in the house doesn't mean he won't be able to make it look nice, or decorate/accessorise to make it homely or to his taste.

FGS don't buy him stuff that you like as it could be such a waste of money. Far better to gift him some vouchers.

sonjadog · 06/06/2021 18:36

The photo of him and his family is a nice idea, but I would give vouchers instead of the rest. All those things depend on personal taste and he should make his home the way he wants it. If he is a "blokey bloke" maybe he doesn't care about cushions and throws and candles? You are making assumptions about what a home should look like that are in your own personal taste. I think you mean well, but let him make his home how he chooses it. Or if you don't want to buy vouchers, then ask him what he would like.

I think op’s probably bought the gift by now

No, you didn't. A spammer resurrected it, I reported it but it seems they've just deleted the entire post instead of just the usual message deleted by HQ thing, must be a new thing.

Anyhow ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMBIE

I'd focus more on the child than him, otherwise it's likely that whatever you buy would end up gathering dust.

A nice train set?

NannyAndJohn · 07/06/2021 10:20

Oh fuck me
