Help! Step daughter getting married in December. No clue what to wear

DecemberWedding · 03/11/2020 20:17

DSS was supposed to be getting married during lockdown and they postponed it to next year - a big lavish wedding. They have decided they can't wait and are now going to go ahead and do a small registry wedding with a dinner in a posh restaurant in December after the latest lockdown, all being well.

I live in jeans, trainers and jumpers. I only have casual boots and shoes.

Can someone help me find something suitable? I am 5 ft tall, rather overweight all over but especially my tummy and thighs, young looking 50 something old. I tend to buy petite size clothes in size 12. I don't wear heels and I like to be warm and I am not afraid of colour.

One saving grace is I do have a Boden coat in red and it's very smart and I have never worn it.

I haven't got a clue where to start.

A little black dress would look great with a smart red coat. Look here: www.phase-eight.com/clothing/dresses/littleblack/

Or tailored black trousers with a silky top also in black

I'm 5'1 and have a lovely 'occasion' dress from Ghost. I find their midi length okay on me. Easy returns too.

whiskyremorse · 03/11/2020 21:03

Have a look at Bombshell. They are really flattering and well made. I was mother of the bride recently and felt confident and comfortable in mine. And they cater for curves if you have them!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 03/11/2020 21:08

Oh I think jewel green would be lovely for a winter wedding. John Lewis have a few lovely ones
I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?

Something like this www.monsoon.co.uk/cara-peacock-embroidered-cape-dress-teal-74507579.html obviously it would be longer on you

WouldBeGood · 03/11/2020 21:10

Don’t wear a black dress, especially not with a red coat.

These Bombshell dresses look great and flattering. But not frumpy. Maybe you could get the hem taken up if they’re too long,

A green pussy bow shift dress might be nice

I love this - could you get it taken up so it was more suited to your height? I’d invest in a lovely fur wrap to go with it

DecemberWedding · 04/11/2020 07:21

Just a quick message to say thank you to everyone for their ideas. I’ll have more time this evening to look at the suggestions properly. Smile

How about a jumpsuit - more coverage, more comfortable, can make alterations to accommodate your height and footwear choice?

Genuine bargain if you like a simple, classic look that you can dress up with accessories.

DecemberWedding · 04/11/2020 19:18

Thank you for looking Pinkcadillac - those are lovely dresses but I try to avoid wearing black.

WouldBeGood and whiskeyremorse the Bombshell dresses are gorgeous but all out of stock on the ones I like. Sad

sooverthemill - Ghost dresses are beautiful and the ones in the sales are reasonably priced. I was drawn to this one. I love that colour.

Tellmeagain That jumpsuit is a gorgeous colour. I've never thought of wearing a jumpsuit. Mmm.

allNaturalBlondeYeahRight There was no link - I do like emerald green

37weekswithno2 I like that one from Bravissimo - it even has different lengths and colours.

goose1964 I love that dress but not the sleeves, which is real shame.

Disabrie22 Beautiful. Love it. I would have to take it up some but worry that the waist wouldn't sit right either but I think I might order it and see what happens. Thank you.

So I like the Ghost dress I linked to, the Bravissimo dress and the Monsoon dress that Disabrie linked to. I will ponder some more and then order. Might order the jumpsuit to see what I look like in a jumpsuit.

@DecemberWedding I have both colours. It really is beautiful. If you're not particularly busty then just get the 'lowest' curvy rating.

averythinline · 04/11/2020 19:50

That Ghost dress you linked to is fab - order that!

movingonup20 · 04/11/2020 19:59

@Pinkcadillac

Not black- it's considered bad taste for weddings unless the couple specify black tie.

Sooverthemill · 04/11/2020 19:59

@DecemberWedding glad you've seen something you like! Ghost are so lovely and their sales are great value

absolutehush · 04/11/2020 20:02

Have you looked at Nancy Mac? Lovely quality, and most things come in velvet as well as crepe. They do an excellent line in jumpsuits!
