Had anyone used shop bought hair stripper and lived to tell the tale?

Dyed my hair red and can't get it out. I've always gone to salons before so not sure what I was thinking. Hair looks awful now as roots one colour and hair another. Can't dye over it as red pulls through. 😡

I don't know any good salons in the area so am thinking of stripping it and dying natural colour.

Is this a sensible plan? Any recommendations of which one to use?

Thank you 😊

I bought one on Superdrug and it was fine. I did dye my hair again straight away, but it took out the old dark colour first.

Babyshine2020 · 31/10/2020 09:18

I did my mums but her hair is very very thick. It needed 3 boxes but the colour we put on tooo very well & we didn't have any hair breakages and it still looked/felt ok!

ifiwasascent · 31/10/2020 09:19

I did but my poor hair felt like straw after!

triceratops12 · 31/10/2020 09:19

I know someone that did it and had to have her hair off so I wouldn't recommend it

BlueThistles · 31/10/2020 09:31

It does work and very well... your own hair will look very strange but thats because the hair will return to a base colour.. my hair has red undertones so went super light strawberry blonde... I tinted again immediately.. its great.. the only recommendation would be... be prepared and follow the instructions to the letter...

good luck 🌺

I used it and put a semi permanent on after it, I would recommend putting it on and then leaving a day as it can oxidise so then you will have a more realistic colour to dye on top of.

I use Christopher Robin on top of my blonde dyed hair, it matches my roots and has improved my hair no end. I didn’t want to go back to the hairdresser after lockdown and wanted healthier hair. It’s really worked for me

Prettyconfused · 31/10/2020 09:40

I used the type that stinks or rotten eggs. Worked fine, but had to dye afterwards.
I’d recommend using an planked mask afterwards, to get rid of the straw like feeling.
Also, keep rinsing it longer than you think, as per the instructions. Any left over pigment will oxidise again and become visible when you dye your hair. If you have many different bands of different lightness you may need a hairdresser or lots of skill to get it back to uniform with store semi-permanents.
Good luck!

Color Oops. Works a treat! Buy two if you have long or thick hair. No damage.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 31/10/2020 10:00

I've used colour b4 and Scott Cornwall decolour a few occassions and despite the smell they've worked well, both after red dyes. Definitely need to over dye after though.

Recently tried colourless with brown too dark dye and it really wasn't as good, however it did take enough out so dyed part of my hair matched the roots so I could dye over with one consistent colour. My hair was bleached for a while so the mids to ends definitely weren't naturally brunette though the colourless only brought them to that level.

Ooh I didn't see these responses. I thought the thread was a lost cause 😂

I decided to book in with a hairdresser. However, it was for Thursday so it's probably off now. Annoyed as was really excited and paid a substantial deposit. I was going to try to look like the below. I feel sorry for the poor hairdresser too. It all means I may be going back to the colour remover plan.

Dare I ask what h the e smell is like?

Yes. Went strawberry blonde that really doesn't suit me so used a toner I have short hear so it was easy to grow out and no damage.

Groovee · 01/11/2020 07:21

I used the Superdrug one. It was totally fine and I redyed it a few days later as it was so blonde post stripping.

toria658 · 01/11/2020 07:22

Yes and it was ok, but get lots of conditioner and double the amount you would usually use. Saved me from looking like Wednesday from the Addams family.

The smell is rotten eggs, but thoroughly washing out and repeated normal washed will help.

IndecentFeminist · 01/11/2020 08:43

I've got a box looking at me on the dresser, haven't summoned up the courage yet. Am quite grey under the dye.

What are the toners people talk about?

It's a sort of off egg/blocked drain smell. Definitely wouldn't recommend it as a perfume. Can sometimes linger in the hair until the next wash too.
SunshineCake · 01/11/2020 16:20

I did it and had five thick horizontal stripes in different colours Grin. I then dyed my hair and it was fine. As long as you have a colour to put on, maybe two boxes, and decent conditioner I would give it a go. You don't like it now so nothing to lose.

Fallsballs · 01/11/2020 16:33

DD’s hair went pure orange squash colour with a Superdrug one. It did, after using a bleach, eventually go blonde but her hair is in awful condition and had to be cut quite short.
Proceed with caution op !

BibbityBobbityBellend · 01/11/2020 18:22

I don't think it's a great sign that it has such a rotten smell to it. How strange.

The hairdresser called me today. We have rebooked for Monday evening. I'm nervous to get into bleaching again before lockdown so have asked for a balayage. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll try to take a before abs after.

you'll be in safe hands OP 🌺

MrsHookey · 01/11/2020 20:02

I was advised by the hair dye company to put head and shoulders in my hair and leave it for 15 minutes. It worked perfectly and took the dye out.

earsup · 02/11/2020 01:43

Head and shoulders with crushed up vit tablets work well but leave hair very dry...try that first !

BibbityBobbityBellend · 02/11/2020 21:01

Poor hairdresser. We spent a sold 15 mins deliberating on what to do with it!

So before is dark. After is less dark 😂😂😂
