Would it be madness to buy shoes a size too large?

I've fallen in love with a pair of past season Vans, but I can only find a pair in size 6, and I'm a size 5. Would it be madness to buy them? Would they never fit properly / chew up my feet? Do you think I could lace them tight enough? I'll wear them with tights a lot, so woolly socks aren't really an option!

They’d never fit right no matter how many tights you wore, I don’t think. Have you checked eBay or any other resell sites?

Horseradish01 · 18/10/2020 13:21

Insoles?

Notgoingonholiday · 18/10/2020 13:26

You'll wear them always thinking about how they don't fit...at least that's what would happen to me. I can't stand shoes being too big, always feel they look huge, even though it's obviously only a small amount 'more shoe' than the size down.

Asterion · 18/10/2020 13:27

I've done that loads, you just get padded insoles.

Also a heel grip, if you need them.

Popcornismandatory · 18/10/2020 13:44

They're lovely I'd buy them and buy insoles as others have suggested

AuntVictoria · 18/10/2020 14:12

I've tried ebay and even downloaded Depop in my search but no luck. I hadn't thought of insoles, thanks all, will give them a go!

Are they these OP?
Listed ages ago but the seller has been active in the last week. Worth asking.

They're the ones @applepineapple, thank you so much for looking! However the rip puts me off, I don't have the skills to fix them unfortunately.

No worries! I shall keep my eyes open for you, just in case.

Ellapaella · 18/10/2020 17:04

I think vans are quite big anyway though and usually size down but I guess if you really can't live without them it's worth a try!

ScarMatty · 18/10/2020 17:31

I wouldn't. Vans come up big anyway and always 'expand' quite a bit because of the material.

AuntVictoria · 18/10/2020 17:36

Argh I've bought them now! Fingers crossed they are unusually small!

SavySoy · 18/10/2020 17:37

Fingers crossed for you. I bought a pair of shoes that were half a size too big and never felt comfortable.

GreyishDays · 18/10/2020 17:39

I’m wearing a size too big trainer and quite like them.

SpaceRaiders · 18/10/2020 19:10

Also try YOOX they usually have past season stuff on sale.

Bloodylovecheese · 18/10/2020 23:33

Have you tried calling the store in the outlet village at Cheshire Oaks? Worth a try?

AuntVictoria · 19/10/2020 04:51

Thanks for the suggestion re YOOX, I hadn't heard of it before so will be useful in the future. These shoes aren't available on it though unfortunately.

I've already phoned the outlet in Braintree as it's not far from me and they said my best bet was online. Thanks for the suggestion though!

@CoffeeChouxBun who knew I needed sheepskin insoles... but now I know they exist I need them. I'm so happy you posted these! Thanks

CoffeeChouxBun · 19/10/2020 07:29

@DarkMutterings they are thick and warm and, being proper sheepskin rather than some nylon fleece imitation, your feet won't sweat! Beware though- they are super thick, especially when new, you do need space in your shoes for them.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/10/2020 07:46

I'm a 5 and I find Vans on the smaller side, particularly the slip ons. I've got very narrow feet too. Hope that cheers you, OP.
