Oh my - what on Earth do you wear to a job interview?

As title says I have zero clue. I have been home for 10 years - not a typo - and I’m usual housewife look. What can I put together by Tuesday?! My last interview was even longer away - it was suits. Now I know it’s all causal at work now but the interview? It’s in a school and an admin role not secretary. Any help gratefully received - thank you

I wore for an office job recently some smart black trousers and a nice top with some brogues. Or what about a dress. You definitely don't wear a suit - esp not for a school admin role.

Good luck with the interview !

Full PPE and a loudhailer to enable social distancing?

What do you have in your wardrobe?

FlorenceNightshade · 17/10/2020 15:43

Something comfortable for sitting in, make sure you can cross your legs comfortably etc. A pair of smart trousers, nice shoes, a blouse or top and cardigan would be fine. If you go for a skirt or dress make sure it’s a decent length. Definitely not a suit unless it’s a senior role

My wardrobe is very typical for current role - jeans, chinos (khaki) knits (chunky and fine) and a few shirts. Dresses which are not evening are really not appropriate - my favourite will be too leggy. I do have a vintage style shirt dress in navy but that is probably a bit way out. Oh a purple cord skirt, navy pleated and denim. I’ve always wanted a blazer so I think I’ll grab one so at least it will add to my current wardrobe. I’ll feel too slob in my current cardigans. H swears I have black trousers - so I’ll hunt them out.
So black trousers and a grey flannel Wool blazer with one of my shirts? My feet would either be courts or suede shoe boot things?!

Sounds perfect good luck!

I like the sound of the navy pleated skirt, if the proportions would work with your new blazer. (Always find black trousers a bit depressing as day wear, but that's probably just me.)

(Have namechanged - no sockpuppeting intended!)

People don’t wear suits for interviews any more? Seriously? (I’ve also been a SAHM for 10 years).

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2020 05:56

Of course people still wear suits for interviews! My DS insisted in wearing his prom suit to his interview at McDonalds. Grin

We recently interviewed someone for an admin job. They wore a back dress, black tights, black ballet pumps. She got the job.
You don't need to wear a suit though. For my last interview I wore smart trousers with a thin v-neck jumper and low heals. I didn't expect to get the job, but did. I work where people wear everything from trainers to suits, quite often together.

MrsPear · 18/10/2020 16:25

LynetteScavo that reminds me I have my funeral dress! Wear that with leopard loafers and camel coat if the blazer doesn’t arrive / look good.

I recently had an interview and wore a linen shift dress (dark bluey grey colour) with a round neck. However it was via zoom so they could only see my head and shoulders. I wore an interesting silver necklace to brighten it up.

TBH I spent more time thinking about the lighting and background. It was definitely easier having a zoom interview as I didn't have my usual panic about not having suitable shoes and was able to wear leggings and cosy socks on my bottom half Smile

It's a long time since I wore a suit to a job interview. When I got my last job I think I wore smartish trousers, long sleeved top and cardi to the interview.
