What is toner (for hair) and how do I buy it?

I have had my hair bleached on the ends and it wasn’t done very well. Uneven, very yellow and looked like a dip dye not a nice easy to maintain balayage that I asked for.

I’ve gone back to the hair dresser and she has put a light brown toner on the ends of my hair, so it’s still not what I asked for but it’s much more passible for me.

I’m due to have a baby any day so just wanted hair that looks nice without a lot of effort!

My experience with toner is that it fades rapidly, I’m not going to be able to go back and get the toner redone every few weeks with a newborn (and don’t think I should since it was her crappy job that makes me need it)

So I’m wondering how I can buy my own toner and apply it (or get my sister to apply it for me) in between?

Long term I’ve booked an appointment with my old trusted hairdresser in December (I’ve moved house so she’s now miles away and not that practical to get to with a tiny baby!)

You can use a purple shampoo rather than a specific toner, leave it on for a while and it's the same effect. I use the Fudge Damage Repair one, and the conditioner is excellent too. Wash with it as normal, and once in a while leave the shampoo on for longer - how long will be trial and error, you need it long enough to take away the yellow, but not long enough to go grey!

Is op not looking for a brown toner rather than a toner to remove yellow from blonde?
OP what is it you are looking for?

Thanks @ChaChaCha2012 I tried purple shampoo (I have the fanola one that people rave about) and it did help the yellowness but the brownish toner has actually covered up a lot of the blonde so hides the line from my natural brown to the yellow blonde and makes it all more subtle.

I just don’t know how to buy a light brown toner, I’m afraid a brown dye will either go orangey or greenish!
