Will it take ok if we use a box dye?

Is he at school? Will they send him home?.

PersonaNonGarter · 05/09/2020 08:09

Hmm I know nothing about hair but I think you should definitely help him do it if that’s what he wants. It’s great to experiment with hair.

Titsywoo · 05/09/2020 11:46

No they don't mind dye if it is a "natural" colour they just won't allow green or whatever.

Yes I am happy for him to experiment I just wasn't sure if blonde hair would take a black colour ok - on the side of the box for black dye it shows what it will look like if your natural colour is various shades of brown but doesn't show the end result from blonde so I wondered if it was ok. I've bought a demi permanent and just done a patch test and also a strand test on a lock of his hair and it seems alright (hopefully it will be dark enough - hard to see on a few strands!)

I'd go for a very dark brown rather than black - it will still look black but will avoid the unnatural look of black box dye.

AngelOfTheSilence · 05/09/2020 11:56

As above, going for a dark brown will be better than black.
You’ll also need to consider that most black/ brown box dyes are blue based so can cause a green tinge on blonde hair.
You’d either need to find a red based dark brown or dye his hair semi permanent orange/red before putting black on.

Oldraver · 05/09/2020 12:06

My DS has blonde hair and had dyed it blue a couple of times. Neither took very well. He ha swnated to dye it black but just asumed it will end up grey

Think we are doing something wrong

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 15:03

Dye it jet black. Dark brown will look silly.

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 15:04

His eyebrows and eyelashes will look very blond

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 05/09/2020 16:39

Is his hair naturally blonde? I know bleach blonde to black will cause it to go green. I’d go for a brown with a red hue first then a black on top if he wants to go darker.

OutOfDateAppleCrumble · 05/09/2020 16:41

I don’t think box dye jet black hair look good on anyone tbh. Is he going for the goth look? Otherwise dark brown will look much more natural.

Titsywoo · 05/09/2020 17:29

Yeah I think he wants goth. We tried it with a black wash out spray and it looked fine. His hair is a very dark blonde so not sure the green issue will happen. His eyebrows and eyelashes are more brown than blonde.

My DD dyed her blonde hair dark black. Goth style. It always worked well. She’s 33 now so gone back to natural.

CodenameVillanelle · 05/09/2020 17:35

Black box dye looks awful. Though I guess if he's a bit goth anyway it will fit his look, but if he's just trying to look like he has naturally black hair he won't. It will look fake and awful. It also never fades so he'll have to grow it out or shave his hair.

Titsywoo · 05/09/2020 17:47

Don't have much choice as hairdressers won't dye his hair (under 16)

Do schools really do this? There are kids with all sorts of coloured hair in D.C. school.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 05/09/2020 17:56

Apply Vaseline liberally to hairline, nape of neck and ears. Black dye is a bugger to get off of skin.

It will likely be more of a dark brown than true black, for true black you need a permanent like Schwarzkopf live and it can look a bit dull and Matt after a few washes, I prefer blue/black as it has more shine.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/09/2020 20:18

Patch Test
Do the strand test for the colour outcome and a Patch Test for alllergies every time you use a dye especially a darker one .

My DD (dark hair brown eyes and a skin that tans easily ) wanted to dye her hair black (she's 18)
I didn;t tell her that'll look shit but sugggested a Semi/P in very dark brown to try . It looked nice , she didn't look dug up , and it faded evenly .

With your DS he'll have roots to contend with too . Black can look a bit sooty if it is over layered .

Notarealmum · 06/09/2020 08:27

I’ve got dark blonde hair and have had it dyed most colours over time - it’s never, ever turned green, or even green-ish! If he wants a goth look he’s clearly not wanting it to look natural so you definitely need to choose black and not dark brown. How long is it? If it’s only short it’ll grow out in no time anyway if the experiment isn’t entirely successful. Good luck, it’s nice you’re helping him to get the look he wants.

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 06/09/2020 08:45

Should be fine. Took me 2 years of begging to get my mum to allow me to dye my hair from blonde to black aged 15 (she finally relented when I reached 15 and got it as a surprise on Christmas!) and I loved it. It suited me much better than my blonde ever did and I kept it black for about 8 years. Always a box dye and it was beautiful and glossy, definitely didn’t look crap as some posters are suggesting Hmm. I was a goth as a teenager but kept it black even when I wasn’t anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️

I would suggest just going for permanent, it shouldn’t go green if his hair is natural now. There are semi permanent blacks but don’t be fooled, black is never semi!

Titsywoo · 08/09/2020 00:17

Well it worked ok! We used a semi in the end and it's definitely very black. Bit sooty looking but he is happy. Our neighbour did his eyebrows. He got lots of compliments from his friends at school today and it seems lots of kids dyed their hair over lockdown so he isn't alone. I managed to not get it everywhere by using a dye brush and bowl instead of just squeezing it straight from the bottle. So his ears and hairline are dye free! Thanks for the advice all. I still think his natural hair looks better but it's his call Smile

It's short so easily grown out and chopped off if it faded badly!

Pleased the operation was successful!

toiletpaper · 08/09/2020 04:18

I've done my hair a ton of colours over the years and always done it myself. I was jet black for about 5 years (also went through an emo/gothy phase). I'm currently bright pink and purple atm Grin
