Alternatives to skinny jeans

tempnamechange98765 · 04/08/2020 17:06

My uniform for as long as I can remember has been skinny jeans and a top, and trainers eg converse/flip flops in the summer. I used to be pretty slim but I'm now 32 with two small DC and am carrying a bit more weight than before.

I still wear a size 10 in tops and baggier trousers, but skinny jeans aren't really my friend anymore, I find them too uncomfortable and restrictive and they just highlight my bulgy tummy/thighs/bum.

I feel a bit lost about what to wear as an alternative to skinnies! I haven't tried mom jeans but I don't think they'll flatter me as I have chunky thighs, also I don't know what kind of too would go with them?

I've got a few pairs of Next harem jogger style trousers which I wear to work from home mainly, also dungarees which I love...I would love any other suggestions please!

I would love to know too! Fed up of skinnies, but mom jeans just emphasis the fact that I need to lose 3 stone have a chunky middle section from knee to underboob Grin

Laquila · 04/08/2020 21:14

I am a size 14 and give zero fucks about mom jeans emphasising anything - I just recently bought a pair on the Next sale and I love them. They make me feel slightly nostalgic and it's just no e to have a change after SO MANY years of skinny jeans. I also have a much-loved pair of AND/OR barrel jeans but I don't think they make the style anymore. They're sort of a cross between boyfriend and mom jeans and are so comfy. God I love a high waist!!

houstonspca · 04/08/2020 21:16

Love mom jeans! Try a pair, you might find them more flattering than you think Smile

houstonspca · 04/08/2020 21:17

Actually, as an alternative I also find the Next Relaxed Skinny style perfect. Not too tight, not too loose, very comfy. Not as flattering as mom jeans though, for me anyway.

Thanks all! Think I'll give a few styles a try, need to branch out some time. I've just ordered some straight leg from ASOS as I couldn't see any Mom that I like, but I'll take a look on next too.

I've definitely lost my mojo a bit. Post baby number 1 I felt I bounced back and was still "me" in terms of style. Baby number 2 is now 17 months and I still don't feel I have that back. Lockdown hasn't helped.

What are mom jeans? Never heard of them but I think I need some....! I now have a tummy I didn't have before after two babies and need to adjust what I'm wearing accordingly!

Willow4987 · 05/08/2020 13:14

Oh god I could have written this. I’m also 32 and after 2 DC only 18 months apart I’ve lost myself a bit

I still know what I like and what my ‘style’ is. I just don’t have any clothes are this anymore.

I really want to throw everything away and start again (obviously I won’t Grin) but what my style is vs what actually works with my slightly larger post baby body are two very different things right now Confused

dumpling123 · 05/08/2020 13:39

I've always had an overhang on my tummy and found the button on jeans quite uncomfortable, even before baby. Instead of jeans, I buy the Eden jeggings from Dorothy Perkins. They're very comfortable but look just like jeans and wash well.

They're jeans that are more on the baggy-ish side and usually roll up at the bottom. I love them but I know alot of people hate them.Grin
vixb1 · 05/08/2020 14:39

I've googled them, I think the high waist might be good for me, as I get cut in half and end up with an extra bit over the top!

Although I can't see any for sale in M&S so I'll have to take a risk on shopping elsewhere.

Ughhh, I really am turning into my mother. Must try harder....!

bedjolly · 05/08/2020 15:07

I got my mom jeans from primark as they were 36 length which was perfect for me to roll them up at the bottom however the quality was crap and they shrunk after washing. Topshop do great jeans I had skinny jeans that lasted me ages but I gave them away after getting pregnant I don't think I'll fit in them again.Grin

Happymum12345 · 07/08/2020 09:51

High wasted jeggings from m & s. £15 & they’re great at sucking in, lifting up etc.

tempnamechange98765 · 08/08/2020 20:54

Hmm so I ordered straight leg jeans from ASOS, they were the River Island Molly ones. They look exactly like some skinny ripped ones I have from New Look so I wouldn't have kept them, but OMG they were tiny! I am definitely snug in size 10 jeans these days but the size 12 was tiny and I couldn't get them on! It's boiling so I'm hoping it's that Blush I do need to try and lose a bit of weight though.

Next stop the Next straight leg!

Next do really good jeggings/treggings. I prefer them to jeans as they let you move more easily.

doadeer · 08/08/2020 21:57

I love the topShop mom jeans. They are fab. I also got some great cargo type joggers from h&m let me find a link

I think these look really nice for park days, maybe a Jean alternative?

I'd say with mom jeans from topshop go a size up as they have no stretch.

askmehowiknow · 08/08/2020 22:56

I wear Levi slim fit jeans and a t shirt. (Size 8/10 in my 30s). Hate skinny jeans though.

Recently I've been buying more dresses to mix it up a bit. Plus I like oversized T shirt and skirt look. I also love my 10 year old top shop denim shirts all summer

SamK93 · 08/08/2020 22:58

I'd go with leggings/jeggings

askmehowiknow · 08/08/2020 23:00

I personally think mom jeans are very difficult to pull off (as a mum)! They're either ironic/cool. Or just mumsie!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/08/2020 00:32

I’m a hippy size 10, with a small waist. I wear:

Barrel leg jeans - mine are Whistles
Levi’s 501s
Balloon leg jeans - mine are Levi’s again
Just got some high waisted straight leg jeans from Monki

I chucked all my skinny jeans a few years back, bat one pair just in case. They are still hanging on a hook in the airing cupboard.

Top-wise I either wear something tucked in, or something slightly cropped which just sits on the waistband (particularly with jumpers).

PickAChew · 09/08/2020 00:37

The thing I hate about jeggings. Even more than the cling, is the lack of fucking pockets.

PickAChew · 09/08/2020 00:38

And all you sizes 10s need to stop pretending you're fat.

Hyperfish101 · 09/08/2020 00:45

Try girlfriend or boyfriend jeans. Not as tapered as Mom jeans. I have some from
Sainsbury’s of all places. Cost me £12 in a sale. Nice high waist and loose through the leg. I will never go back to skinnies!

(scarily I read that low rise jeans are in the way back. Just no)

NerrSnerr · 09/08/2020 10:50

What's wrong with a mum being Mumsie?

cuppycakey · 09/08/2020 12:11

Mom jeans look dreadful on me.

I wear straight or bootcut. Levi 501s if you can stretch to it.
