Anyone over 50 and still have dark hair ?

Hi ladies just wondering if anyone else has this problem, I'm in my 50s and have dark hair with a bit of grey, about 15 percent max. I've always dyed my mid brown very mousey hair a shade darker and chestnut or red/mahogany at various stages. I'm getting to the point now where I'm thinking I cant stay dark forever but not sure what to do. I had highlights a few years ago and i looked hideous, it actually aged me more than the brunette. I've got fair/medium caucasian skin. Most women my age are going lighter. I've spoken to my hairdresser about going blonde but she said I'm not grey enough yet and tbh when ive tried different shades of blonde or even light brown on an app it looks awful. My eyebrows are also still very dark. I dont mind the grey but hate my natural colour as it is so ashy.

I’m almost 49. Went totally blonde with highlights in my still ( very dark brown hair)
It can be done :)

withlotsoflove · 09/07/2020 10:42

Continued: - so that it looks more natural. I am also fair / pink undertone. Not alabaster.

@withlotsoflove I'm pretty lazy about getting roots done etc. Hairdresser told me it was possible but it would need quite a bit of maintenance at present. What made you decide to go blonde, was it grey showing or just wanted a change ? Even a tiny amount of grey shows on dark hair doesn't it ?

Hi yes, I'm pink undertone as well and have high colour in my cheeks so don't look pale. What shade of blonde did you go for was it warm or cool ? My eyebrows are proper black, not even brownish black if you know what I mean. I'm getting the odd grey eyebrow hair so I'm sure at some point they will get lighter.

I have had very dark brown, almost black hair since birth accompanied by v pale skin with pinkish undertone - think Morticia Adams or Lady Mary from Downton if being kinder! I have about 10 percent grey I would guess. Died it for 7-8 years just to cover grey but have gone au naturel for past 5 years as didn't like the reddish tinge and also decided that I was actually quite happy to embrace the grey. It's noticeable to me but I actually quite like my grey 'highlights' as it makes a change! I have memories of sitting with my friends as a teenager using 'Toners and Shaders' and watching my friends end up with varying shades of plum or chestnut while nothing ever showed up on my hair!
Just wanted to give another perspective and say that it is possible to forgo the dye, but I appreciate that's not for everyone.

I thought blonde would suit me better : l don’t have any greys! ( which this lockdown has proved to my sceptical colleagues 🤣)
It’s really easy to maintain - over a block colour. I vary my colours / it was very blonde last summer. I’ll see if l can find some kind of pictures to show you & then get them deleted! @NannyOgg66 Smile

I'm 59. I only started going noticeably grey a couple of years ago, but I quite like it.

I used to colour my hair years ago, but stopped because I just couldn't be bothered having it done every couple of months.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/07/2020 12:42

I am similar to you. I am 57 and have quite dark hair (which has definitely got darker as I've got older) and very few greys, very pale skin, red cheeks. Somehow I look like someone who dyes their hair too dark which isn't fair!

withlotsoflove · 09/07/2020 13:06

I once read that before your hair turns grey/white, it will go very dark!
This is what mine did.
And then l turned to bleach 🤣

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 09/07/2020 13:12

I've let my grey grow out during lockdown (I'm 58). I've been blond for about 15 years. I'ma bit sick of blond if truth be told.
My natural colour was very dark almost black, with pale skin and eyes, so dying it darker made me look like morticia.
Surprisingly I'm not as grey as I remember. I'm wondering if the hairdresser can put low lights in to take some blond away and let it grow all out.

bloodywhitecat · 09/07/2020 13:27

Dark hair and olive skinned here, I do have a few greys but they are mainly underneath so I don't colour my hair. I am soon to be 57 and blonde is not a colour I had ever considered, I'll probably just go grey disgracefully

MrsVeryTired · 09/07/2020 13:34

Not 50 yet but will be soon and I can't imagine changing what i do. I have naturally very dark brown hair and still use very dark brown box dye, my eyebrows are almost black and I have light olive skin and dark eyes. I might end up getting some hightlights to soften the look but as I only dye my roots my hair doesn't usually have that box-dye all over color look anyway so its not harsh (I don't think).

NannyOgg66 · 09/07/2020 14:18

Thank you everyone for the input. I feel pressure to go lighter but it just can't suit everyone I guess.
@withlotsoflove you do not look 49! I would say that's a cool blonde. It goes really well with your colouring.
@Tollergirl mine isn't as dark as nearly black, but it is very very ash almost like a greyish brown . I think black or very dark hair looks nice with grey highlights, seen a photo of Demi Moore with grey streaks. I dont mind the grey I just hate my natural colour it's not flattering. I feel quite jealous of women with beautiful silver hair. If mine was like that I would definitely let it grow out.
@Chicchicchicchiclana my aunt is in her 70s and doesn't have much grey, just a streak at front , people don't believe she doesn't dye her hair.

@NannyOgg66
Yes! I suppose it is a cool blonde. You should see it now though 🤣
I have a much needed appointment on the 24th!
Good luck with whatever you do decide on ~ it ain’t easy!

lindyloo57 · 09/07/2020 17:07

Withlotsoflove, I love your hair colour is it bleach or bleach and toner? I have been having highlights just bleach, for 30 years I'm 59 with dark blonde mousey hair colour, I am now going to try and grow them out and go natural.

lindyloo57 · 09/07/2020 17:09

Just to add hardly any greys as yet, I have a friend who's hair as gone grey all most silver, it looks lovely , I'm very jealous, but she hates it.

Thank u! It’s all just foils. Gradually built up over 2 years! I think my hairdresser usually does 3 colours.
SerenityNowwwww · 09/07/2020 17:26

Mines red - not as red as it used to be - more red like a fox. Dad still has black hair when he died (in his early 70s and it defiantly wasn’t dyed).

steppemum · 09/07/2020 17:36

mine is mid to dark brown. Not rich mahogony, more dark mousey Grin

I am 53 and have about 10-20 % grey. I have no intention of dying it, as I can't be bothered with roots, but i have wonderd about highlights or low lights.

the colour is genetic though, Dad and his Mum were both dark brown/black hair and neither went grey until 70+

AnnaNimmity · 10/07/2020 07:12

I am naturally very dark brown, nearly black. I'm 50 and have very few greys - a few strands in one spot, so still have long dark hair and look ok for the moment - I have olive skin and dark eyes (greek parentage).

I also worry about looking older with dark hair, but think that blond isn't the way to go (for me anyway) - as it doesn't suit me. It just makes me look yellow. (red hair didn't suit me either for that matter).

So I think that when the time is right, I'll dye my hair silver all over. Have you considered that? There are a few instagram accounts with women who've are naturally silver, and I think it looks really good.

beenrumbled · 10/07/2020 07:33

I'm 50 next month, and my hair is dark brown with red undertones- and very long. I have pale freckly skin with red cheeks (rosacea)

I have grey that shows mostly at my parting and around my forehead but I've not died my hair since I was in my 20s and I tried to die my hair blond at home. It did not end well! TBH, with how dark most of my hair is the maintenance of going lighter would be a pain and expensive, so I haven't bothered.

I was thinking of trying high lights or similar, as I know being really dark haired as you get older can age you but I'm really not sure either.

Deathraystare · 10/07/2020 07:38

I am thinking now that the golden brown that I dye my hair as I am now thinking it is too light. When it fades out it looks a bit pathetic like I am trying to say "Look, I am really blonde after all". I guess I will have to go a bit darker , maybe chestnut?

Bloody grey are showing again (they couldn't wait could they?!) so it seems I will have to make my mind up sooner than later. :(

withlotsoflove · 10/07/2020 10:06

I tell everyone lm not a natural blonde! I don’t think it matters- so many colours around now.
The younger ones are using grey! Grin
