Just received some skirts I've ordered to send a relative aboard. She 14 tall and slim and I ordered H&M small .. they look big what size would they be a UK 10? I think maybe she needs an 8, but she is very tall and I know sometimes you need bigger than you appear ?!

Her mum is not helpful and their sizes aren't like ours a all. So tricky

You are very brave to buy a 14yo clothes without her being there! Unless she has no other way of getting clothes or can’t access H&M I would get her a gift voucher and let her pick her own. H&M sizes are completely random.

Crikey. How longs a piece of string. Maybe ask for her waist measurement so at least you've got some idea.

ishouldtryabiteachdayy · 16/06/2020 00:07

Yeah I know, could all be going in the recycling, but I'm out of ideas of what to buy her. I've bought 5 items in shades of black, white & grey from H&M just the skirts seem big. She's in another country and clothing is very expensive there. They have to travel a couple of hours to the main city.

I would ask for a waist measurement.

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/06/2020 01:17

Ask for actual measurements and look at the sizing guide on the website.

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/06/2020 01:25

Do they have access to a tailor? If so focus on natural/quality fabrics and they can just get them adjusted if too big. I always send large sizes to family as its easier to restitch.

Budapestpest · 16/06/2020 08:21

H&M sizing used to be tiny and at times all over the place. They’ve really sorted out their sizing recently though and it’s far more true to size. I would say a small is around a 10

PhoneLock · 16/06/2020 09:59

Even their own size chart can't decide whether an S is an 8, 10 or 12!

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/06/2020 10:12

H&M sizing is mental, and depends a lot on the cut too. A lot of my wardrobe is H&M so it’s well reflected. I’m a 12 in most places but have everything from XS to L, 10 to 14. Really just depends on the item. If you think she’s an 8 an XS skirt is more likely

MissMarplesAssistant · 16/06/2020 10:32

i used the H&M size finder and the size was still wrong! I am anything from a S (very occasionally) to an XL (thankfully also occasionally) in there.

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/06/2020 10:37

H&M sizing is tiny.
DD wears (16) wears a lot of H&M and there is a size guide measurements thing on the website.
I am a 12 trouser everywhere except H&M where I am a "you're an obese blob and shouldn't even try and look nice"
I am a busty 14 (so buy 16) top and have a couple of H&M shirts and tees which are XXL. Hmm

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/06/2020 10:38

DD is 16, not wears 16.

EmmaC78 · 16/06/2020 10:38

Agree that H & M is tiny. I am a 10 in most shops but sometimes can't fit into a 16 in H&M.

Budapestpest · 16/06/2020 11:05

Are all these experiences recent though? I too have not fitted into an xl at H&M when I’m a 12, but not recently. They had a massive overhaul of their sizing last year and sorted most of it out so it’s much more true to size now

Nikeybikey · 16/06/2020 11:17

H&M is true to size. I'm a 6 and wear xs in H&M.

Woolly17 · 16/06/2020 11:44

I've always found H&M sizes true to size. However, I'm not short and I think they cater more accurately to people sized 5'8" and above.

They recently overhauled their sizes to make a 10 bigger so I am now an 8 there.

Wafflehouse · 16/06/2020 11:51

I cannot get on with H&M sizing, it seems to be completely random, I wear a 14-16 in shirts but got one in there that is a 10 and fits really well. I am absolutely not a 10, especially in the bust. I also bought some shorts in there at the same time that are true to size Confused. I don’t think a standardised sizing system really exists anymore, you just seem to need to try everything on. Sorry, that’s not helpful.

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/06/2020 12:09

I don’t agree H&M sizes are tiny, they just seem to vary more on the cut. I’ve got size 10 dresses from there and I’m not a size 10 anywhere else. Trousers with no stretch I might need bigger than usual. I think sizing is more consistent with other shops now than it was say, 10 years ago.

onwheels · 16/06/2020 14:28

h and m is true to size. i wear a medium as a 10-12 and a large as a 12-14 depending on my weight yoyo

ishouldtryabiteachdayy · 16/06/2020 21:46

@Nikeybikey I'd say I need an 8, so would you think it would be an XS too or would this be too small if that's your size and you're a 6 ?

OP posts:
ishouldtryabiteachdayy · 16/06/2020 21:51

@PhoneLock 😂 I didn't even look at the chart, just assumed as Xs was the smallest she'd need the next one up as she's pretty tall. She's certainly tiny in terms of waist, she still a kid at 14, but she's not petit in terms of height.

OP posts:
PeazlyPops · 16/06/2020 22:20

H&M have sorted out their crazy sizing recently. I'm a consistent size S, but a large 10.

ishouldtryabiteachdayy · 17/06/2020 18:16

@PeazlyPops hmm your probably right I think the S skirts look like a 10, probably?! So hard to tell. I saw my relative at Xmas when they came over to the UK, but it's hard to know on sizes.
