Dyeing ends of hair turquoise - advice for 13yo

My 13 yo wants to dye the ends of her hair turquoise. We tried a temporary colour on it but it literally made no difference, so think we need something stronger, or maybe bleach the ends first? I've no idea, I haven't coloured my own hair since a mishap with a bottle of Sun-In in 1989....
It doesn't matter if it's permanent, in fact I think she'd prefer not to have to re-do it so often. Does anyone know how best to achieve this, or recommendations for colour?

Cant help I'm afraid. Tried the temp 'Live' pink in my very blonde 13year olds hair and there was not even a hint of colour.

Would like to find something either temporary or permanent also

I am guessing she has brown hair? In which case you need to bleach it.

Get the bleach you mix together (powder and developer) but buy 30 vol developer. Don't get 40 as you will likely fry the ends off.

When bleaching the hair, resist the urge to lather it like shampoo. Just paint it on thick and leave it.

When it has lightened a decent amount, apply colour. I can't recommend a brand since I haven't done my own hair for about 5 years, but I used Manic Panic when I wanted to have fun with temporary vibrant colours.

Don't use a box dye. Boxes lie.

Turquoise will also likely fade to green after a week or so. Not usually a nice one either..

My 8 year olds hair is currently green / turquoise it was supposed to be blue. It's been in nearly 3 weeks. It was from amazon.

Manic panic or directions colours are fab, her hair will need to be prelightened to get the full effect.

Easiest way to do it is to put hair into 4 pigtails, put the bands about half an inch higher than you want the dye to go. Bleach while in the pigtails, stop the bleach below the ponytail band so you can rinse each ponytail really well once the times elapsed, then put the dye on, rinse and remove the bands.

Is any bleach kit ok? As long as 30 vol developer. I asume they're all much the same?

They are all petty similar, be really careful about the timing though and keep checking it, as soon as it gets light enough wash it out. I over bleached mine a few years ago and it really messed my hair up.

Be careful- blue is a very long-lasting colour. Like, until it's cut or bleached out. It can fade to an unpleasant khaki colour.

My DD did this last summer. We bleached the bottom two inches of her hair with Jerome Russell powder bleach and developer. Then used the Schwarzkopf bright turquoise dye. It washed out after a few weeks as we have a pool, so the daily dose of chlorine faded it, but having the ends white blonde was great as she was then also able to put pink and purple dye on it before she went back to school. We had all the bleached and dyed bits trimmed off at the hairdressers the day before the autumn term started. She's planning to do it again this week :)

We don't mind it being long lasting, but not so keen on khaki. Her hair is quite long and we're just dyeing a few inches at the end first. So if it goes horribly wrong she can cut it off, and it won't be a complete disaster. Although I'm sure she won't see it that way, but that's teenagers for you!

Ah now she's lucky enough (or that's how she sees it) to be at a school without strict rules about hair colour, so if she likes it she can keep it as long as she wants.

We used a colour called Blue Lagoon by Rebellious Colours from Amazon. My young DD's light brown hair is still turquoise several weeks later. Really pleased with the colour.

A 30 volume bleach kit needs to be applied first, don’t let the bleach go dry on the hair, apply a LOT and if it starts to dry reapply. The Jerome Russell bleach is good and available on Amazon.
Directions is a good hair dye brand, which is cheap and they have a wide variety of colours. It’s also available on amazon. Manic panic hair dye is also available on amazon and is also really good!
Unnatural coloured hair dye fades quite quickly so I’d recommend buying her a separate conditioner and adding some of the hair dye to the conditioner, when she showers she should use this conditioner on the dyed parts of her hair, this will help to prevent it fading as fast :))

It is really important with the pigtail method to not get bleach on the elastic band, you need to be able to thoroughly rinse all the bleach off and if it's caught up in the band you won't be able to do that, so make sure you stop the bleach at least a fingers width below the band.

Dye in conditioner bottle is a great tip too, it just refreshes the colour slightly each time.

Do bear in mind that the crazy colours do run, so change out any white pillow cases or they will turn blue, and make sure she has her own 'ruinable' towels for when she washes her hair.

I had a fun day many years ago when I had purple hair and it rained. I had a purple neck all day at school!

I died my hair like this before & loved it, but as people have said blue is the most difficult colour to remove from your hair and when bleached won't go any lighter then a pale pastel green on a yellow base, so you're daughter will need to cut off the died parts when she no longer wants it x

I dont mine myself and i found it looked better bleaching it when it was backcomed at the bottom because it didnt leave a line in my head from bleach to my natural colour and flowed like it was done professionally. Theres maybe videos on youtube but basically once you bleach it all the a certain lenght, have bleach on the brush and brush it slighty up your daughters hair as if your backcombing it just above the bits that have been blached so the colour flows naturally and there isn't a line.

Do not use crazy colour dyes they turn out a completely different colour!! I would try either manic panic or loréal colour match in Carribean Blue (i have this through my hair) and honestly it hardly fades it lasts till I die it again because my roots grow in.
