I'm going to a wedding soon, and being short of cash I'm putting together an outfit from various nice separates in my wardrobe. Please tell me what shoes and handbag to wear.

I'll be wearing a nice full-length blue skirt, a plain sleeveless black top and a cream velvet jacket. Should I wear black shoes and handbag, or cream shoes and handbag?

Thanks in advance from someone who's no good at this whole style thing.
(Waiting now for loads of responses telling me the basic outfit is wrong... [apprehensive])

I'd go for the cream. Black shoes can look odd with lighter-coloured outfits. I'm wondering about the black top with blue and cream... Is it a bit out of kilter with the rest of the ensemble, esp if you have cream accessories? Maybe something more neutral?

fluffyanimal · 20/09/2007 11:57

I don't have anything more neutral. Well I do have a beige top, but the shade somehow looked wrong with the cream jacket, which was why I opted for the black. I really can't afford new clothes right now.

Is there any way at all you have got black skirt or trousers rather than blue skirt? I think all black underneath cream jacket and with cream accessories would work, but not convinced about the blue-black-cream combination, sorry..

mishymoo · 20/09/2007 12:04

Agree with flowerybeanbag - not sure about the cream, black and blue?

fluffyanimal · 20/09/2007 12:07

Oh dear, I knew this would happen. I'm crap at clothes and always end up looking at other people at weddings thinking they look so nice and I look so frumpy.

I really don't have anything else appropriate, or that fits (got too fat for all my nice clothes ). The only black trousers I have are jeans. But thanks for the suggestions anyway.

sorry it soesnt sound that good,

havent you anything else?

fluffyanimal · 20/09/2007 12:12

Could I ask you all to take the attitude of 'doing the best one can in limited circumstances' and stick to the cream vs black shoes and bag? I accept that the whole outfit could be improved, but I mustn't spend money on new clothes right now (and I'm fatter than all my friends so can't borrow anything). Thanks for trying to help though.

Whay dont you post in the wanted section for an outfit for a wedding?

People on here are really lovely and im sure someone will havesomething they dont want anymore.

nangnangnang · 20/09/2007 12:20

The fact that you've tried a different top and could see it didn't work means the outfit you're planning does. Stand in front of a mirror and see how it all looks with cream/black accessories, jacket done/undone, hair up/down, even different lipstick and see what pleases you most.

fluffyanimal · 20/09/2007 12:26

That's kind of my dilemma - with the jacket on you can barely see the black top, so I think that works OK. Without the jacket, the combination of black top - blue skirt works OK too. So if I go for cream shoes and bag, will it look weird if I take the jacket off? If I go for black, will that look weird while I have the jacket on?

Alternatively, help me get the mindset that I don't give a toss whether other people think I look weird, then this whole issue doesn't matter!

fluffy you definitely won't look weird, and of course it doesn't matter what other people think either
I suggested black bottoms of some kind as that's the kind of thing most people have of some description.

If you think the blue skirt and black top works (and obviously only you have seen it!), then I would go with the cream accessories.

nangnangnang · 20/09/2007 13:14

I'd dress for the earlier part of the day (ie standing around in the cold) and wear the cream with the jacket done up. Then take it off when everyone's had a couple of drinks and no-one cares anymore.

And everyone should be looking at the bride anyway...
