Hi ladies,

I suffer from keratosis pilaris (KP) and have just decided to start tackling it seriously. So I ordered the following:

  • Revitale Salicylic Acid Scrub Soap
(www. class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/Revitale-Salicylic-Exfoliating-Softening-Anti-Blemish/dp/B06XW6GCD6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=revitale&qid=1588156332&sr=8-1%29&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-style-and-beauty-3894440-Fellow-keratosis-pilaris-sufferers-dermatologists-beauty-experts-I-need-your-expert-advice" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/Revitale-Salicylic-Exfoliating-Softening-Anti-Blemish/dp/B06XW6GCD6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=revitale&qid=1588156332&sr=8-1)
  • CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream
(www. class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/CeraVe-Smoothing-Moisturising-Cream-177ml/dp/B07WL7WV52/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=cerave%20smoothing&qid=1588156251&sr=8-1%29&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-style-and-beauty-3894440-Fellow-keratosis-pilaris-sufferers-dermatologists-beauty-experts-I-need-your-expert-advice" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/CeraVe-Smoothing-Moisturising-Cream-177ml/dp/B07WL7WV52/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=cerave+smoothing&qid=1588156251&sr=8-1)

*Which soap should I start using first? Also, which essential oil would it be safe to add to my shower gel while also using the other products?

*DD (6) suffers from mild KP. Any advice regarding how to tackle hers too please?

Any tips/ recommendations are gratefully received.

Thanks in advance!

Gluten free help i dont know why though or whether you would consider a dietary change.

userabcname · 29/04/2020 11:53

I have this! It never bothered me before but it started spreading so I've started seeing if I can improve it. So far all I've done is exfoliate in the shower everyday (just using random stuff I got for Christmas, nothing special) and an Ameliorate moisturizer which I found on Amazon. I'm applying that twice a day. So far, it does seem to be improving. On your dd, I'd probably try sudocream (I put this on everything!) before bed and then a gentle moisturizer in the morning and see how it goes.

Sakuratu · 29/04/2020 12:05

@CandyMan10 thanks for posting. I read about gluten free diet but sadly I am a massive gluten lover. So any dietary change is out of the question :)

@KatnissK thanks for the tips. DD hates Sudocrem :(

In my experience none of those expensive products work. I have been trying to find a cure for my kp for 30+ years and this is what I find helps keep it at bay (95% gone) -

Gluten free dairy free diet - paleo gave the best results for me

Gentle exfoliation - I use an ameliorate mit (found the ameliorate lotion useless) and in the shower cheap exfoliating gloves with normal soap

Liberal moisturising - I use Superdrug vitamin e body cream. As it is cheap and comes in a big tub I am more likely to use lots of it and therefore get a good result. I have tried all the usual expensive lotions recommended for kp and they all gave inferior results to this cheap cream and usually smelled bad too

Sunlight. Nothing gives as good results as sunlight in my experience.

Honestly I've spent a fortune on kp treatments over the years, save your money and follow which of these tips you can instead.

AmethystMoonShine · 29/04/2020 12:19

I find Ameliorate effective. Gluten free may work for some but certainly not my gluten free daughter with coeliac disease, so complete avoidance of gluten Sad

Sakuratu · 29/04/2020 18:41

@AmethystMoonShine Thanks for your input! Hope your DD's KP is mild. What are you using for it?

OP posts:
AmethystMoonShine · 29/04/2020 18:52

@Sakuratu it’s fairly mild but her skin is so sensitive I daren’t put anything much on it. Mainly Eucerin moisturiser and minimise bathing as it dries out her skin... she’s only 7 so okay but that’ll get trickier as she get older and sweatier! Blush

Mindblank · 29/04/2020 19:54

About a year ago, I changed from shower gel to soap (mainly to eliminate at least 1 plastic bottle from the bathroom) and my KP has gone!
I’d had it for so long that I’d just accepted it as a fact so I was very pleasantly surprised

@SeekingWaxWings thanks for your input and all the advice I appreciate.

@AmethystMoonShine I heard that some children seem to just outgrow it, so hopefully she will :)

@MindBlank that's good to know! I might try this when I use up all the shower gels I have. Thanks!

@Lowprofilename yes I read a lot about this.

@Sakuratu I’ve been using one of those Korean gloves and ameliorate for about 4 weeks and I have seen a dramatic improvement- almost gone on one arm and drastically reduced on the other. The packaging says that is a safe for use on children over 3 (I think, I haven’t got it in front of me) xx

RD15 · 29/04/2020 21:28

Ps- I’ve also just swapped to soap after reading things online but it’s too early to say if it’s made a difference xx

Tabithha · 29/04/2020 23:05

Use exfoliating bath gloves when you shower. Also I wouldn’t add essential oil when you’re using acids. You may suffer a chemical burn. The ordinary has a parent company that makes a retin-oil that’s very good. If you use the oil don’t use it with the cerave cream as you can’t mix retinol and acids. Alternate them on different days. Face theory also has a glycolic acid body cream that’s very good. I use it at night as it’s strong and tingles a lot. Again don’t use it with the cerave cream or the retin oil. With KP you have to be consistent so i’d recommend using the bath gloves every day as they exfoliate really well. Hope that helps 😊

Amortentia · 30/04/2020 03:27

Has anyone found a version of Ameliorate or Cerave SA that doesn’t smell like mouldy yeast. I think both work well but my god the smell is dreadful and puts me off using them as much as I would like to.

mirandawastoogoodforsteve · 30/04/2020 04:02

Lanate Body Cream is made for this. I think in the UK you can buy it on EBay or Amazon.

mirandawastoogoodforsteve · 30/04/2020 04:03

Also taking silica supplements works well.

RD15 · 30/04/2020 06:38

@Amortentia I know you mean about the smell but my bumpy arms were getting out of control and it does work. Ameliorate do an unscented version but I’ve never tried it xx

Sakuratu · 30/04/2020 08:18

@RD15 Thanks for the tips! I've had those Korean Italy wash towels for over a year now and never used them. I have a toddler and my showers take no more than 10 mnts, let alone baths which I consider a luxury... so you see why I can't use them as they need soaking, etc.

@RD15 and @Mindblank which soap did you choose please?
@Tabithha thanks for all the useful info! Could you please tell me: can I use (on my body) Revitale Advanced Salicylic Acid & Sulphur Scrub Treatment Soap that I mentioned in my original post and the Cerave cream (they both contain Salicylic). I might use the soap once a week and the cream everyday to begin with? Does the cream stain clothes? Are these two products + Salux wash cloth sufficient to tackle KP?
@mirandawastoogoodforsteve thanks for the info. I'll look them up both!

TheCanterburyWhales · 30/04/2020 08:21

Ameliorate and Korean flannel cured my dd's KP.
She continues to use it every so often but it's magic stuff.

Sakuratu · 30/04/2020 08:28

@TheCanterburyWhales Thanks! Ameliorate seems very popular; I might give it a try.

@Everybody I have just discovered this:

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Anti-Aging Smoothing Lotion 250ml

Is it effective? It is way cheaper than all the "smoothing" products I've seen.

OP posts:
Blankscreen · 30/04/2020 09:05

I also suffer with this. I have the Korean towels and now use soap. It is slightly better.

Which Ameliorate product should I use? I just looked in Amazon and there are loads.

RD15 · 30/04/2020 09:41

@blankscreen I use the transforming body lotion. I bought the smaller one to begin with but have just bought the big one with the pump because I found it so effective.

@Sakuratu I bought this soap but for no other reason than it was free of ‘nasties’, smelled lovely and I can get it from Tesco’s on my shop:

www.littlesoapcompany.co.uk/product/natural-cleansing-lemon-zest-soap-bar/

Tabithha · 30/04/2020 11:41

@Sakuratu yes you can use the soap and cerave cream together as they both contain the same acid. I would use the soap every other day. The cream doesn’t stain clothes. I really recommend the bath gloves as I think you’d get better exfoliation. You can get them at wilko/savers for £1-£2. It’s also essential you moisturise every day if you’re exfoliating this much. You don’t have to use the acidic creams every day as that might be too much. I use them every other day. On days I’m not using them I use the intensive vitamin e body cream from Superdrug. Very moisturising as it’s about £3 for a large tub.

Sakuratu · 30/04/2020 11:41

@RD15 thanks for the link. I am seriously thinking about switching to soap as soon as I use up all the shower gels I have. I haven't used one since I was a child!

OP posts:
Sakuratu · 30/04/2020 11:56

@Thabita thanks so much for the info! I will follow your suggestion. What about the Revitale Salicylic Acid Scrub Soap (not the sulphur one), can I use it on my face do you think? I suffer some hormonal acne and blackheads on my nose and chin. Is it better to use it every other day or a few times a week?
What about Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Anti-Aging Smoothing Lotion 250ml? Can I use it when I don't use Cerave? I read that it might be good on KP.

Too many questions, I know. Sorry, hope you don't mind.

Thanks!
