I used to have lovely glossy hair but suspect that was more to do with me dying it super dark and the conditioner sachets that come with dye.
I haven't dyed my hair in years and it just looks dull and lifeless. I also havent had it cut properly which doesn't help. Despite not liking going to the hair dressers I had actually made an appointment and then COVID hit!!
So I'm after product recommendations. Nothing that might weigh my hair down as I have very straight hair.
I just want soft, healthy, shiny hair again!!

Do you heat style your hair? I had a similar issue, mine used to be lovely and just lost it’s shine, it’s come back a lot since I’ve been air-drying. Same products.

I know dry it everyday but have done for most of my life and now i only straighten my fringe and the very front of my hair.

change your shampoo often, cycle through a few different ones using a different one each time on rotation. Rinse with cold water at the end of the wash. Olaplex number 2 is amazing (expensive but worth it). Don't wash every day. Co-wash occasionally with conditioner only.

Plump82 · 26/04/2020 21:25

I change my shampoo each time i finish a bottle. I already rinse with cold water. I think ill treat myself to Opalex. I definitely couldn't wash every 2nd day. I suffer with bad skin and unwashed hair definitely makes it worse.

Have you tried air drying? I was blow drying and it’s so much softer and shinier air dried. I didn’t straighten it much either. I was washing my hair every day so blow drying it every day and I think the damage was building up.

Is it mostly dry or dull at the ends, do you use a good conditioner on the ends? Or is it all over that it feels dry/dull?

I use Hair Story which I also think it good for my hair condition - it’s not drying, a lot of shampoos can be.

I’ve recently switched to the OGX shampoo and conditioners and the difference in how shiny my hair looks is dramatic. It’s never really been the type of hair to look shiny before (unless blow dryer and straightened / curled with specific shine products). Now my hair looks great (and shines) with just air drying.

My hair is shoulder length silvery grey. I wash the roots ONLY with an argan oil shampoo that doesn't contain any sulfates. I apply the same brand in conditioner and massage it through the lower half of my hair, using sparingly on the rest. My hair is extremely soft and in good condition.

I also saturate my hair in olive oil completely overnight, once a week. Washing that out is the only time I shampoo it all over. You can also do this with coconut oil if you want.

This is the brand I use:

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0771QL1RC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It comes in litre bottles and is vegan and 100% worth it.

Balls I forgot to add - I only use a hairdryer when I'm doing something special like going out to dinner etc. Otherwise I leave my hair to air dry.

Smillar2020 · 27/04/2020 07:01

L’Oréal Serie Expert gold shampoo is fab - even my hairdresser said my hair was in great condition

Rocaille · 27/04/2020 07:58

Smiller, is that the nutrifier one or the quinoa + protein one?

I've been thinking of trying Serie Expert for a while, but can't work out which one would be best.

Rocaille · 27/04/2020 07:59

Sorry - typo, meant Smillar.

Plump82 · 27/04/2020 11:17

@ThanksForAllTheFish - I let my hair airdry at the weekends or if I'm off work. But it ends up huge and fluffy so i really wouldn't want to turn up to work like that! Also it takes a good few hours to dry so it just wouldn't be practical.

@Whataloadofshite - I'll look into the argan oil shampoo. Random question, is it a clear shampoo or creamy? I can't use creamy shampoos or my roots end up really greasy. Love your username name btw!
My hair has high needs doesnt it!

@swiftier - Id say it's mainly the ends that are dry but it could do with improvement all over really. I'll check out Hair Story as well. Haven't heard of them.

Function of Beauty. You tell them what you want n they make it for you. Expensive but so worth it. I'll only use that now my hair is in amazing condition.

I have naturally fine, straight, greasy blonde hair that I have to wash every day. Last year I went dark brown and then back to blonde and my hair is now dried and crispy like candy floss especially at the front where I had a fringe. I use Aussie 3 Miracle Lightweight Oil - a couple of pumps, rub run between your palms and work it into the ends. Keep away from the roots, just focus on the dry crispy bits. I put it on wet hair before blow drying. It's a miracle. You need to not use too much tho and every few days have a break. On those days I use Revlon Uniq 1 treatment spray (again, on wet hair).

magicmallow · 27/04/2020 17:15

Rather than changing shampoo every time you finish a bottle, keep four different bottles or so and change to cycle through and use a different one each wash, it helps stop build up.

I really rate Palmer's Coconut Oil leave in conditioner. I've got fine hair but was able to be quite liberal with it. I let it air dry and it came out beautifully soft. I don't use it every day as my hair is prone to lankness. Added bonus is that you smell divine! superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Conditioners/Leave-In-Conditioner/Palmer%27s-Coconut-Oil-Formula-Leave-In-Conditioner-250ml/p/422400

I like the Give Me hair mask which smells lovely. I have quite dry hair and it now feels soft.
