My hair is naturally brown, but for the summer I have had loads of blonde highlights. I am now fed up with black roots every 3 weeks and want to go brown/red for autumn, with a view to maybe having some coppery hightlights put through when I have some cash.
My hairdresser can't fit me in until next week, so I thought I'd give it a go with a shop bought dye. Can anyone suggest a good one to use? I have dyed my hair many times myself but this will be the first time over bleached hair.
I am a little scared.

putting a colour over bleached hair is for professionals or loons only imho

have you not heard stories of green/orange hair post home dye kits?

will a few more days really make any difference? can you find another hairdresser that can fit you in earlier?

Am ringing around now, if I can't get in this afternoon.
Then I'll have to wear a hat.

i used to bung a semi-permanent on my hair (highlighted) when it grew out a bit. it was ok.

childminderjanet · 15/09/2007 13:32

southeastastras what colour did you put over your highlights?
Did they stay lighter than the rest of your hair?

yes but it looked ok (like low lights). i put on a light ash brown colour iirc. don't blame me if it doesn't work though

A friend of mine turned her hair purple doing that

ScoobyDooooo · 15/09/2007 13:39

Don't do it leave it to people who know what there doing it will most probably go wrong BEWARE.

childminderjanet · 15/09/2007 13:41

Have spoken to a friend who is always colouring her hair. She said it could be a disaster, but using a colour with a red tone in is normally ok. Otherwise purple is my fave colour. Think I will wander to the shops and have a look.
She also suggested that I might do a strand test first.
Thats sure to look great a streak of orange/green/ purple running through my hair.

the only thing was, when i went back to the hairdresses, because i'd used a colour, they could only use bleach for highlights and not tint (but that was ok because i go for bleach anyway)

childminderjanet · 15/09/2007 13:44

I'm so not having blonde again, so that won't be a problem.
Thankyou all anyway.
I can't say I haven't been warned.

just be careful !! I'd try to live with it until a professional can sort it...

lilacclaire · 15/09/2007 14:55

I have managed to turn my hair orange and then pink with home hair dyes.
Only a qualified person can touch my highlights now!

KristinaM · 15/09/2007 15:40

sorry i agree with teh others. dont do it

your hair is brown and blond and you are going to dye it brown / red??? madness

EscapeFrom · 15/09/2007 15:45

Go for it. I have dyed over highlights with reddish brown, and it was ok. Looked better than with the highlights, which were going a bit manky.

childminderjanet · 15/09/2007 19:47

Have now dyed it with boots permanent mahogany hair colour. It has turned out lush a really rich red/brown. I am so pleased and all for £2.50.

i was always dyeing my hair, glad it turned out ok

Roskva · 16/09/2007 13:18

Glad it worked - if it had gone purple, I would have asked to see a pic, mind
