The alternative to dress and leggings

Hi so apparently dress and leggings is a big no no. I wear mostly toast or Gudrun sjoden and in summer wear leggings and sandals.
This is because I had developed a varicose vein when pregnant and then had surgery to remove it (bad move) and my entire calf is covered in varicose veins and spider veins. I have tried using fake tan which hides the discolouration but not the throbbing mess 😬 apart from wearing maxi dresses what’s the alternative? I don’t like wearing trousers/jeans as ima peculiar shape 32/30/44

What’s wrong with dress and leggings?

thethoughtfox · 17/04/2020 11:51

3/4 length leggings can look OK and still summery with sandals. You could try Vita Liberata Body Blur. It is like instant fake tan/ body make up and blurs out most imperfections. People won't be staring at the backs of your calves and are unlikely to notice if the colour is concealed ( I know you will be be hyper aware of it) Floaty maxi skirts are gorgeous. My sister has the same issue.

Isn't Gudrun Sjoden mainly dress and leggings? Nothing wrong with them.
Keep wearing them if you like it.

CountFosco · 17/04/2020 11:57

I think a maxi dress or skirt or wide legged trousers or any kind of trouser are all good options. Or saying fuck it and exposing your legs. I can promise you they look far worse in your head (both the scarring and their shape) than they actually are and any decent adult would not care what your legs look like. Think of them as dickhead detectors, you will immediately know that if someone is rude about your legs you don't need to waste any more time in their company.

Midi dresses are still in. Dresses and leggings are dated but if you are happy wearing them why change?

duletty · 17/04/2020 12:29

Vita liberata is the brand I use, it’s excellent

If you want to wear leggings and feel comfortable in them, then wear them I like loose boyfriend t shirts with leggings and converse, and wear quite often. I DGAF if it's acceptable to other people or not.

Forgotten Tribes have some harem trousers you might like, could see them fitting into a lagen look

OhioOhioOhio · 17/04/2020 13:05

I asked this the other day. Apparently loads of people don't care.

Fatted · 17/04/2020 13:10

Well I still commit the fashion faux pax which is nude tights with a dress and flat shoes.

I personally need something to avoid the Chub rub and hate fake tan. I'd say just brave bearing your legs. I've never liked mine, but I'm not in high school anymore and adults don't mock the colour of them anymore (to my face at least). If someone is so concerned about me having the ordacity to expose my legs to the general public, they don't have enough to keep them occupied.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/04/2020 13:10
  • Dress and leggings are great, I'm wearing that a lot WFH
  • if it's warm then midi or maxi skirt
  • if it's really warm, fuckit, wear what you like.

I used to keep my thread-veiny cellulite-y legs covered at all costs. Now I don't and no-one fell over in shock.

Mumof1andacat · 17/04/2020 13:10

I always wear trousers as have short dumpy legs. I wear linen wide leg trousers or cotton patterned trousers. The last few summers have had lots of these in the shops.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/04/2020 13:47

I have both scars and varicose veins on my legs, and go bare legged in summer, often in quite short stuff.

When I was in my early 20s my grandad overheard me complaining to me about feeling self-conscious about this, that and the other and roared at me "what makes you think anyone's that interested in YOU??!" Harsh but true. Most people are too busy with their own stuff to pay much attention to others!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 15:13

Can you not just wear your Gudrun gear, as you like it? Being somewhat overweight since menopause, I tend to have to wear what I feel comfortable in. Seriously, wear what you enjoy wearing.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 17/04/2020 15:20

I had varicose vein surgery with minimal scarring but i have a big flare on my right calf. I really dislike it. I had planned to do something about it this year but COVID got in the way. However I carry on regardless. A bit of Sally Hansen (I find it better than Vita Liberata) and off I go. No one has ever said anything to me about it, not even the fashion police. And heaven help us, even if someone said something, really?? Says more about them.
None of us is perfect. I like @CountFosco approach - dickhead detectors.

ZaZathecat · 17/04/2020 15:34

I get my varicose veins out when it's hot, but if I want to feel I'm looking my best I spread on Primark's leg make-up (instant body tan - cant remember what it's actually called), and I think it makes my veiny legs look 10x better.

Hellbentwellwent · 17/04/2020 15:38

Jumpsuits, mid calf if you’re too hot in full length, there’s some lovely ones about if you can get the right fit. Dungarees too in floaty fabric, I’m living in a pair of midi length dundargees at the minute with a boxy linen T-shirt underneath
