I have a box of hair dye. Can I use it just for the roots?

I get my hair dyed at the hairdresser (mostly grey hair) and my roots are about 1.5". I bought a box of Clairol nice and easy hair dye, but completely forgot that I'll probably need two boxes as my hair is long and extremely thick.

I've seen that clairol do a 'root touch up'. Is it the same as a regular hair dye, just not a smaller pack? The box I have is the closest match to my current colour. Can I just use it on my roots? Or are they different products?

I'm worried about starting to dye my hair all over and run out of dye.

Sorry, that should have read "just a smaller pack"?

yes if the colour matches you can just use it on your roots

That's good to hear. I have some of the root touch up pack coming from Amazon (but not for another 5 weeks). It seems to be the closest match available. But might I end up with a different colour on the roots? I've never dyed my own hair and have never just got my roots done.

I do this - have A LOT of hair so would need 2 boxes to do it all, but I just use a whole box on the roots. Not a problem and I’ve fact my hairdresser says it blends really well.

I wouldn’t use two boxes of dye if you just need to cover the roots, you don’t want to end up with a block of same colour. Just use it for the roots and when that’s done comb it through lengths.

There's usually instructions in the leaflet for how to do just your roots. I agree with luggage about doing roots then combing through lengths.

I am so relieved I have never dyed my hair. It used to be very very dark brown [almost black] but is now quite grey. I was never brave enough to have it touched up. Smile

Once you’ve mixed the dye, you can’t save it for another time. You have to use it there and then. Use it on the roots, then comb through to the ends for five mins.

I have used this on a number of occasions and can safely say that I no longer do.
The grey coverage is awful it simply does not cover.

I always use my regular dye for my roots, I mix a teaspoon each of colour and developer and apply to my roots and temples, multiple up if it has been a while.

You can also buy a spray from L'Oreal . It's really easy to use and really does work very well.

Sorry - link here

Can't seem to post the link! If this doesn't work, then Google L'oreal Magic Retouch
