Can't get my highlights redone for a while - what should I do?

Apologies if there are lots of similar threads!

Cancelled my hair appointment this morning as there are lots of elderly people who go there and would never forgive myself if I passed something on. Or picked something up that I passed on to my mum who relies on me.

I know it's a stupid thing to be worried about in the scheme of things, but if anyone out there knows the best way to help me, please help cos I'm a right mess already.

I have grown-out blonde highlights, dark brown roots but lots of grey in there as well (but currently more dark than grey, iyswim). Should I dye the whole lot dark with home dye? What will happen to the blonde bits?

Or just leave it because no one's going to see me anyway?! Plus I will want the blonde highlights again when everything eventually gets back to normal!

Leave it! I’m planning on using this social isolation as a means of growing out both my grey hair to a point where I can stop dyeing it and growing out my overplucked eyebrows.

Hollylolly28 · 18/03/2020 11:52

If you want to dye it use something like casting creme gloss semi permanent it won't be as hard to get rid of when you go get highlights again

InYerFace · 18/03/2020 11:54

Thanks Lovelydovey, your strategy is probably right! Was also thinking that the lack of constantly blow-drying it will do wonders for its condition (if I can persuade my mum to attempt to chop the horrible frizzy ends off for me).

I did think that perhaps if I left it, I could claim it was ombre?

Thanks so much, Hollylolly, I'll get that if I can't stand the grey anymore.

Got visions of me emerging from isolation all wild grey hair, like I've been on a desert island. Kind of like the opposite of Love Island.

Use the loreal spray on root cover stuff, it comes in various colours.

InYerFace · 18/03/2020 12:12

madcatladyforever - thank you! I thought about that, but got confused about colour! Should I go for blonde to match with the highlights, or dark to cover the grey on the roots? The roots are really long and dark, but with lots of grey in there.

I’m going grombré. I love it. I have gorgeous natural Whitelites. It’s glossy and soft and I wish I’d done it years ago.looks fab with red lipstick too.

Hamsterian · 18/03/2020 19:27

Use a good purple shampoo to brighten things up and leave it otherwise

mnthrowaway202020 · 18/03/2020 19:39

Can you post a photo?

Sometimes brown blends into blonde - sort of an ombré look, especially if you only have highlights (as opposed to full head blonde). My hair initially looks awful with my brown regrowth but actually looks better as grows out more, because it looks more like a balayage instead of “her roots need doing”

I do not recommend dying it yourself, you’ll just create more work for your stylist in the future, absolutely stay away from the dark box dye!

Maintain your blonde with purple shampoos, and touch up your roots with the L’Oréal spray. They do a version for “blonde hair with dark roots” - the actual colour is brown not blonde

Messy bun? That’s all you’ll need if you’re able to work from home?

Tanfastic · 18/03/2020 20:00

I do my own, I buy Garnier Nutrisse no7 for my roots which covers my grey and then I buy a bog standard hair streaking kit (with the cap) but I don't use the cap, I just pull strands of hair and use the brush to blonde the bits I want to. Everyone is amazed that I don't go to the hairdressers. Costs me about £12.

Tanfastic · 18/03/2020 20:02

These two 👍🏼

Here's the colour to give you an idea. My roots are very grey naturally.

HappyHoppyHippo · 18/03/2020 20:19

@tanfastic your hair looks lovely!

Tanfastic · 18/03/2020 21:03

Thank you, I cut it myself too 😂😂😂

BloomedAgain · 18/03/2020 21:56

How do you cut it tanfastic? Looks lovely. I'm high risk so now in isolation and feeling very drab.

InYerFace · 19/03/2020 07:16

OMG, Tanfastic, your hair looks incredible! I do wonder if I'd be able to recreate that though as I'm really useless. I can imagine mine looking all streaky and bits where I've missed a bit!

Thanks all for your advice you've been so, so helpful! I'm going to go down the purple shampoo for ends/L'oreal spray for blonde with dark roots and hoping it manages to blend the blonde in with the dark, even if just a little.

You could dye it with a medium red brown. The red will stop the blonde turning green

LadyEloise · 19/03/2020 14:52

Wow Tanfastic your hair is beautiful.
It looks like you just came from Nicky Clarke's or any other top hair stylist salon.

Tanfastic · 19/03/2020 18:45

Thanks ladies 😂🤞 been colouring it myself since I was 14. I only used to have to use the highlight kit but now as I'm grey have to use a dark on my roots as well.

I have a pair of hairdressing scissors, get dh to just cut it straight across the back and I just trim my fringe and the sides. Seem to have gotten away with it so far 😂🤞🤞🤞

ScoutFinchsHam · 19/03/2020 19:58

Tanfastic! That’s amazing! You have my holy grail hair... Tell me, do you have to make sure the brown roots and blonde highlights don’t overlap? Or do you do the darker shade and then do the blonde over the top?

morriseysquif · 19/03/2020 20:02

I have mid brown hair, lots and lots of grey strands and I use a box colour. Because of the grey, it looks highlighted and also because of the grey, I don't get a hard growth line.

Tanfastic · 19/03/2020 22:17

@ScoutFinchsHam I just try and put the brown on my roots, especially my hairline which is white Confused. Then a day or two later I'll put the blonde on random strands. Doesn't seem to matter if I overlap or go over any brown, it always seems to go the colour I want. I found a video on YouTube of a woman that did her own highlights without using foils or a cap. It's so damn easy, my friend does it too 😂. Just wear surgical gloves, mix the powder/liquid, select the strands you want to highlight and I just use my fingers and the brush to coat the strand, being careful not to use too much so it's too wet and then I twist the strand so it just hangs, do that all over, leave it 30 mins and wash off. It's hard to explain really 😂

AnotherMurkyDay · 19/03/2020 22:20

I'd do a root stretch on it and go ombré.

Scruffyoak · 22/03/2020 08:44

I'm just leaving mine!
