GHDs have stopped sliding through hair and are now dragging, think they need oil or does my hair?

I have very old GHDs and although they still do the job and eventually curl and straighten my hair, they seem to be dragging through instead of slipping through my hair. I'm getting obvious lines when I curl.
My coriolis mini ones have never done that, but they're much newer and have shiny silver plates rather than the orange GHD plates, but curls are smaller though.
I always put serum on my hair and it works fine when I use the coriolis but not GHDs, any tips?

In my experience, they just do that when they're old, time for an upgrade I'm afraid!

mommybear1 · 09/03/2020 21:01

Have you cleaned them OP? I find when I use products on my hair they come off on the plates I let the plates heat up then get a baby wipe and wipe the plates and the sides (carefully!) then wipe off with a towel.

gamerchick · 09/03/2020 21:05

It might be a product build up. Try giving them a clean before ditching.

cookiemonster5 · 09/03/2020 21:09

Sounds like they just need a good clean.

pinkrocker · 09/03/2020 22:56

Yeah I've cleaned them, used surgical spirit and then just an old damp facecloth, still no better Sad oh well! Thank you anyway!

The surgical spirit could have stripped the coating. All they needed was a damp cloth and elbow grease.

I have cleaned them before by the way! It's just now they don't compare to the newer silvery ones. They are about 15 years old Blush

I cleaned mine after 12 years reading this thread Blush thanks OP.

Rainb0w · 10/03/2020 18:27

Mine are ten and a half years old never even thought about cleaning them!

Polkadotpjs · 10/03/2020 18:34

Mine drag too. So what do we recommend using? Shampoo on a cloth or is a baby wipe good?

pinkrocker · 11/03/2020 23:50

I haven't found the elixir of restoring them to new slipperiness yet, baby wipes might be worth a try though...

Time to upgrade. I recently had the same with mine- over 10 years old. New ones felt like a dream and did't feel like they were wrecking my hair x

MabelMoo23 · 12/03/2020 18:22

Sounds like the ceramic coating has come off - so basically you are dragging hot metal through your hair now

Mine did exactly the same, hairdresser said the above. Got a new pair, they go through like a dream now

Time for new pair

pinkrocker · 18/03/2020 20:17

Ok...not second hand ones ! Any recommendations for big plate ones?

Yes, your straighteners are wrecking your hair now so definitely time to completely stop using them and buy a new pair. Baby wipes or oil won’t restore the coating which has been damaged unfortunately.

I use GHD gold. I bought them almost 2 years ago and they’re still good. Full disclosure though - I do sometimes feel they drag/catch my hair a tiny bit, so I bought a new pair which did the same thing - so just to forewarn you that new ones aren’t super slippery either. (But they don’t damage my hair or leave creases etc.)

pinkrocker · 18/03/2020 22:22

Ok I shall go looking on Amazon!

@pinkrocker
I use the cloud nine large plate ones. Love them x

pinkrocker · 23/03/2020 15:30

Fab, thank you!

I thought this was because the ionic technology was knackered. I recently bought some new GHD's and don't like them anywhere near as much as my old faithful pair. I find them hard to work with ans they leave little kinks if I try to shape it.
